OBITUARY
9/22/1932 - 3/20/2020
Robert Edward MacDonald, age 87, passed away March 20, 2020, in Rohnert Park, California. Born on September 22, 1932 in San Francisco to Edward Stanley and Martha (Holzgang) MacDonald, Bob and his brother Bill lived in Redwood City, Tomales Bay, and Mill Valley. He graduated from Tamalpais High School in 1950 and went to work as a linotype operator in San Francisco. In 1951, he joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Hawaii where he also attended the University of Hawaii. After discharge from the Air Force, Bob moved to Washington, D.C. and attended the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. He earned his BS degree in 1959 and an MS degree from American University in 1970.
Now married with a child, Bob was accepted into the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service and was posted at embassies or consulates in Ethiopia, Nigeria, Vietnam, Mali, and Morocco before his retirement from federal service in 1977. Bob remarried in 1973 to foreign correspondent Louise Sheldon. Bob served as the Administrative Director in Morocco with the Westinghouse Defense Group from 1977 to 1981. Afterwards, he was assigned to London (UK) as a marketing manager. In 1986, he left Westinghouse to start his own marketing company. From 1989 to 1995, he worked for the state of Maryland as a director in its International Division. Between 1995-2009, Bob served with the International Executive Service Corps (IESC) spending time in Morocco, Lithuania, and Slovakia.
In 2009, Bob retired for good. The following year he and Louise moved to Sedona, Arizona. They both lectured at continuing education groups and were active in the Sedona art scene. After Louise died in August 2018, Bob moved with a close friend, Jerilynn Merritt, to San Francisco, California in 2019 and then to a retirement home in Rohnert Park.
Bob is survived by his daughter Lorie Maltby (Marc) of Kentucky, granddaughter Elizabeth Maltby of Nevada, and stepson Randolph (Ginny) Smith of Pennsylvania. Memorial donations preferred to Doctors Without Borders, Hospice by the Bay, or the University of California San Francisco Institute for the Aging.
