Robert's obituary

Robert “Bob” Luhr, 95, of Stroudsburg, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026, after a life well lived.

Bob was born in Cornish, New Jersey to Arild and Emma Sunday Luhr. He grew up alongside his sisters Hazel, Alma, and Carol, spending his childhood outdoors from sunup to sundown hunting, fishing, and exploring the woods he loved so much. Growing up during the Great Depression helped shape Bob’s strong work ethic and appreciation for the simple joys of life. As a young man, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy and later volunteered with the Belvidere Ambulance Corps. He graduated from Belvidere High School. In 1951, he married Betty Jane Dean who preceded him in death.

Over the years, Bob held many different jobs—so many that his family was still discovering new ones he had held even in the final weeks of his life. Eventually, he discovered his true passion: golf. He became an assistant golf professional at Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club before becoming the golf professional at Water Gap Country Club in 1972. Bob taught countless people not only how to play golf but how to love the game.

Bob was known for his kindness, generosity, and his wonderful sense of humor. He always had a great joke ready and loved to laugh, sing old songs (remembering every lyric), and tell stories. He loved to tinker—whether it was maintaining his beloved 1945 tractor, “Alice,” spending time in his pole barn at his cabin in Pocono Lake, or practicing tying different knots just for the joy of learning something new.

A true outdoorsman, Bob knew just about everything there was to know about deer, birds, fish, and the natural world—and he was always eager to learn more. He never truly retired from hunting and could still be found in the woods each November well into his early 90s. He loved encouraging younger family members to look things up on their “Funk & Wagnall,” which was his name for their cell phones. He also enjoyed sharing his own inventions, including a cocktail he created and proudly named the “Beaver Tail,” after the road where he lived, Beaver Trail. His sharp mind, curiosity, and love of learning stayed with him until his final days, and everyone around him was always learning something new because of him.

Bob loved God and especially cherished a good traditional hymn. His faith and appreciation for life’s simple blessings remained constant throughout his life.

Bob is preceded in death by wife, Barbara Hamm. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Robert, and step-grandson Jeffrey Young, as well as sisters Hazel Harrison, Alma Geiger, and Carol Bill.

He is survived by his daughters, Amy Luhr Broxton of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, and Debra Luhr (Robin) of Griswold, Connecticut, as well as his stepchildren Robin Hamm Young (Peter) and Miles Hamm (Wispy).

He was a proud grandfather to Emily Cerrillo (Jacob) and Adam Broxton (Julie), and step-grandfather to Miles Young. Bob also adored his two great-granddaughters, Liza Broxton and Tilly Cerrillo. He is also survived by Carol Gray, a loving and devoted friend.

A memorial service will be held at Mount Bethel Church, located at 1270 Belvidere Corner Road, Mt. Bethel, Pennsylvania, at 2:00 p.m. on April 27, 2026. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsmen and Conservationists.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the compassionate team at Serenity Hospice, especially Lauren, for the care and kindness shown during Bob’s final days.

Everyone who knew Bob knew that he lived life to the fullest and truly left his mark on this earth. His laughter, stories, and love for the outdoors will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
