Robert's obituary
Robert Martland Hume, known to his loved ones as Bob or “Poppy” to his grandchildren, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2023, at the age of 82 in Bluffton, South Carolina. Born on May 21, 1941, in New York City, NY, Bob led a remarkable life filled with achievements, love, and cherished relationships.
Bob is survived by his devoted and beloved wife, Marilyn Hume, his sister Bobette Kelly, sister-in-law Carolyn Wolf, daughter, Corinne Hume Abramson and son-in-law, Merrill Solomon, son, Rob Hume & daughter-in-law, Wendy Hume, daughter-in-law Amy Hume, seven cherished grandchildren: Emily Berkowitz, Mark Hume, Aaron Abramson, Katie Hume, Parker Hume, Ronan Hume, and Zoe Hume. He was also blessed with the recent arrival of a precious newborn great-granddaughter, Audrey Grace Hume. Bob was preceded in death by his son, James Hume, leaving behind cherished memories.
Bob's educational journey included attending Martin Van Buren High School in Queens, NY. He further pursued his passion for knowledge at Adelphia University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics in 1965. Bob continued his academic pursuits at Syracuse University, earning a master’s degree in engineering in 1970. He later obtained an MBA from SUNY Binghamton in 1987.
Bob's career spanned from 1966 to 1993 as the Manager of the Microwave Development Department at IBM Federal Systems Division in Owego, NY. During his time at IBM, Bob played a critical role in many top-secret projects, including the B2Stealth Bomber and the F4 Wild Weasel. During his tenure with the Microwave Development Department, Bob's innovative mindset led to a patent. Before retiring from IBM, Bob was temporarily loaned to Georgia Tech University. After his retirement, Bob joined Georgia Tech's Office of Minority Education (OMED) as a Data Analysis Partner, where he dedicated 19 additional years to supporting and empowering students. Bob's second career at Georgia Tech was more than just "work" to him; it was a labor of love.
Bob found solace in his faith and most recently worshiped at the Church of the Cross in Bluffton, SC. His spiritual connection brought him comfort and strength throughout his life.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Bob had a passion for various hobbies. He took great pride owning a Ford Thunderbird, which he meticulously maintained and showcased at car clubs and shows. Bob also found joy in sailing and spent as much time as he could out on the water. A lifelong learner, Bob was often found engrossed in technical books or articles, continuously expanding his knowledge. In recent years, he took on the role of captain for the River Bend Bocce Club, fostering camaraderie and friendly competition.
Bob's memory will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of dedication, innovation, and unwavering support will live on in the hearts and minds of those he touched.
