I was so sorry to hear about Bob's passing. Bob was extremely devoted to his work and to the mentorship of those who came to the team. He showed me the ins and outs of the MBE system. I am very fortunate and blessed to have been able to work with and learn from experts like Bob at the KGB.
Thank you and our thoughts are with his family.

I was a graduate student in the TMAH group from 1979 to 1985 and spent much of my time working in the huge thin film evaporator that Bob had set up to grow A15 superconductors. This type of research was completely new to me and he was always extremely generous with his time and a fountain of knowledge on everything related to thin film growth, superconductivity and very much more. Sadly, I have only had very occasional contact with him since I left Stanford but he has nevertheless had a profound impact on my scientific career, particularly on my understanding of materials science. Bob is going to be sorely missed and I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to his family.

Bob was quick to smile, steady when in charge, and always generous during my 8 years as a PhD student - I consider him a friend, and will remember him with lasting gratitude. Bob's connection to and support of many (many) students is also recorded in the acknowledgements sections of their many dissertations - here is the direct quote from mine: "Bob Hammond, the 5th Beatle of KGB, shared unlimited expertise on materials deposition systems, fought a much appreciated and valiant battle to keep tools like the RIBE, PLD, and MBS system operational, and provided positivity and patience in more than his fair share." Thank you, Bob!

Dear Bob,
Kindness, sharing knowledge and expertise, friend. These are some of the words that come into my mind when I am thinking about you. It was a pleasure to interact with you during my postdoc at Stanford 95-98. I wish you to be surrounded by a lot of Bobs up there, that will be a great place to be.

I was a grad student from 1995 to 2001 and spent a lot of that time with Bob in the lab. He was so generous with his time and thoughts, always. I will be forever grateful that our paths crossed as I learned a lot about life and science from Bob. My condolences to the family.

My condolences to Bob's family. I worked with Bob closely as a graduate student throughout 2011-2019. One of my most fond memories at Stanford was having lunch with Bob and other colleagues. Bob's wisdom and friendship will live on in our hearts!

It was great getting to know your Dad from the times we met when he visited. He had some great stories and I enjoyed listening to him. He was quite a character and a truly brilliant man. But beyond his intelligence and zest for life, he loved his family and was so kind to and thoughtful of them, especially his grandsons, Reid and Nathan, whom I know he loved deeply. He will be missed but I know that he continues to be part of that amazing universe which, I know, is always pleased to add a star like him to its firmament.

This is a beautiful tribute to your dad, Andy. The photos speak volumes about his pride and care for his family. Sending love and condolences to you, your brothers, your dad as he's making his transition-- and to my favorite friends, the Hammond family down the street.

The Sauer family sends our heartfelt condolences to the Hammond family. What an incredible man Bob was who leaves his legacy not only in science but with his sons and wonderful grandsons.
