Robert Christopher Henderson

We are mourning the sudden and tragic loss of a wonderful human, Rob Henderson, who passed away unexpectedly at age 61.

Born in Sacramento and a resident of Davis, Rob is survived by his wife, Kristin Mick; sons, Alex and Colin Henderson; sister, Lisa Henderson; stepsons, Gavin and Colin Mick; his boys’ mother, Lori Henderson; and his 17-year-old pug, Rocket.

Rob’s profound impact extended far beyond his immediate family. In his 32-year management career at REI—including more than 20 years as general manager of the Sacramento REI—Rob’s leadership and steady presence earned him respect, friendship and love among his colleagues. Not quite ready for retirement, Rob took a job at the newly opened Dogtopia, a dog day care in Davis. His love for dogs was evident in the warm and gracious manner in which he interacted not only with the dogs but also with their owners.

Rob was well known for his sense of humor, sharp wit and nurturing personality. He loved gardening and enjoyed volunteering at the beautiful arboretum at his alma mater, UC Davis (Class of ’86). His particular interest in tropical plants stemmed from his love of Hawaii. Rob was mildly obsessed with tiki art and sculptures, which helped give the family home and yard a Hawaiian vibe.

Rob was a devoted father, immensely proud of his sons, Alex, 29, and Colin, 27, for the kind, intelligent men they have become. In 2014, Rob found a second chance at love with Kristin. Their bond was extraordinary, and the couple often marveled on how lucky they each felt to have found each other, even if it was a bit later in life. With Rob’s father living to 102, Rob and Kristin believed they had many more years ahead. Though their time was shorter than expected, they built a beautiful life together—one filled with companionship, travel adventures, joy and profound love.

Rob’s entire family, and the vast community of his friends and colleagues are collectively grieving the loss of a magnificent man, gone much too soon.
