Robert's obituary

Robert R. Heick

November 20, 1945 – June 24, 2025

Robert R. Heick, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, was born on November 20, 1945, in Portland, Oregon, the fourth of eight children to Peter and Dorothy Heick.

In 1963, Robert proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Hancock as an Evaporator Operator while stationed in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in 1966, having earned the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Vietnam) and the National Defense Service Medal. He continued his service for three additional years in the U.S. Navy Reserves.

Following his military career, Robert worked a variety of jobs before finding his longtime professional home at Oregon Steel Mills. As a skilled and dedicated millwright, he contributed more than two decades of expertise to the plant, respected by colleagues for his competence and work ethic.

Outside of work, Robert was a man of many interests. He enjoyed fishing, mechanics, crossword puzzles, concerts, and traveling. He especially cherished time with the love of his life, his wife, Theresa. A creative spirit, Robert found joy in watercolor painting, crafting metalwork sculptures, and experimenting in the kitchen.

Robert was also known for his generosity and willingness to lend a hand. Whether it was helping with chores, fixing something that needed repair, or lending his strength to a neighbor’s yard work, he never hesitated to step in. He had a gift for storytelling and loved to share a good laugh, often with a perfectly timed joke. His humor and warmth made him a joy to be around, and his presence filled every room with lightheartedness.

Robert passed away at OHSU in Portland on June 24, 2025, at the age of 79. He will be remembered for his service, his creativity, his humor, and the countless ways he cared for others.

He is survived by his sons Robert R. Heick II, Justin R. Heick, and Jeremy J. Heick (Brandie); his grandchildren Erika, Jaxon, and Alex; his step-grandchild Dylan; his brothers Michael and Jack; and his sister Paula.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Dorothy Heick; and sisters Joan, Diane, Connie, and Barbara.

A graveside service with military honors will be held on Monday, September 8, 2025, at 2:30 PM at Willamette National Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will follow at the family home, where loved ones will gather to honor his memory.
