Robert's obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert "Rob" Fleming Jr. Born on February 19, 1955, he bid his farewell to the world on May 23, 2025. Robert was well known for his warmth, kindness, and direct yet empathetic nature. He believed in the essence of understanding what one doesn't have rather than what one does, a wise lesson he shared with those around him.
Robert spent his formative years honing his culinary skills and graduated with a dual degree in Culinary Arts and Food Service Management from St. Mary's University & Wm R Harper College in 1975. He offically started his career in Chicago at a few different restaurants before moving into the hotel industry as managers of their food and beverage programs. His journey then led him to San Antonio, Texas in 1982 and a year later, he commenced his stint as a General Manager at Potpourri, a job that would change his life for the better as this is where he met and courted his future wife. In 1984, Robert married the love of his life, Sheila Fleming, and together they opened their first restaurant the same year- Steamer’s Café.
Once his daughter was born in 1988, Robert decided to follow a more stable path and joined the Remington Hotel group in where he rose through the ranks to eventually become a Regional VP of Operations, overseeing 12 hotels across the country. After 6 years of constant travel, Rob decided to take a step back and in 1999 the family move back to where he felt home was, in San Antonio Texas. Knowing that he always wanted to open another restaurant and under his passionate leadership, the couple opened the famous Magnolia Pancake Haus in 2000, and a second location in 2012. Robert's culinary masterpiece was his famous Corned Beef Hash, a delight to everyone who tasted it. He worked diligently until his retirement in 2019 when he passed the reins over to his daughter Tricia, leaving behind an extremely successful restaurant.
The greatest joy of Robert's life was his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Sheila, his dear daughter, Tricia Schleicher, son-in-law Dylan Schleicher, and a cherished granddaughter, Vaughn Schleicher. Robert was the loving brother of Thomas Fleming, Kathy Kovaric, and Patrick Fleming. He was predeceased by his parents, Kathern and Robert Fleming, and his brothers Edward and James Fleming.
Robert was a force of nature, determined to provide for his family and give them the life he felt they deserved. His family meant more to his than anything else in the world, something he often mentioned. Anyone who knew Robert knew that he was the most loving father and husband a family could ask for. His zest for life was evident in his choice of music, with his favorites being The Allman Brothers, Tedeschi Trucks Band, and BB King. An ardent fan of the Cubs, he enjoyed spending his free time relaxing with his granddaughter in the most recent years. He also relished taking family vacations to Tulum, Mexico, and Coeur D’Alene, Idaho.
Committed to charitable causes, Robert volunteered at the Family Service Association and was dedicated to supporting local non-profit organizations. In his eyes, his family's happiness was paramount. His generous soul leaves a legacy of giving and asking nothing in return.
We invite you to join us at the memorial service on June 10, 2025, at 10:30 PM at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. A celebration of Robert's life will follow at 12:00 PM at Magnolia Halle. We will remember Robert as a kindhearted, empathetic, and loving soul whose luminance will continue to shine brightly in our hearts.
