River's obituary
In Loving Memory of River
May 20, 2025
With a heavy heart, I announce the passing of my beloved sheepdog-cattle dog mix, River, who left us peacefully by natural causes in the comfort of his bed at home. River, adopted from the Yolo County Animal Shelter in 2008, brought immeasurable joy, protection, and love into my life for 17 remarkable years.
River’s adventurous spirit defined him. His enthusiasm for walks, playful wrestling with other dogs, and following his keen nose on explorations filled our days with delight. He savored every bite of food with unmatched gusto, a true connoisseur of life’s simple pleasures.
River entered my life while I was living with my then-partner, Kristy Levings. He formed a special bond with Kristy, becoming her loyal companion and mastering an array of tricks that charmed everyone. On the ranch, River patrolled the fields with purpose, his presence a steadfast comfort. At our home near Dave Douglass Park, he became a local celebrity among dog walkers, who greeted him fondly through the fence. His daring escapes were legendary—whether exploring the neighborhood on his own terms or sneaking a joyride in the backseat of an unsuspecting grocery shopper’s sedan, River’s curiosity knew no bounds.
In his later years, River and I settled in Woodland, where we enjoyed countless walks to Woodside Park and around the neighborhood. He developed a tender bond with my mother, Lisa Hildebrand, and her dog, Jasper. I am deeply grateful to my mom for her unwavering support in caring for River during his two-year battle with terminal illness. My determination to give River as much time and joy as possible was made possible by her love and help.
I am thankful to God for blessing me with River’s companionship and to all of you who knew and loved him. His spirit will live on in our hearts forever.
Peace be with you, my friends,
Brian Douglass
