Mom’s 93rd birthday
2018, Claremont, CA, USA
Mom’s 93rd birthday — with Mom
My Mom was one of the strongest people I’ve ever met. She was so brave in the face of adversity. I’m sure she was scared, and I know she cried herself to sleep many nights, but she never gave up and never let anyone see how scared she was. Because she was a single Mom in the 1960s she was forced to face many obstacles, not the least of which was her abusive ex-husband who had a drinking problem. She never let that stop her. Because giving up is not an option for a single Mom and nobody hides pain better than a woman trying to remain strong for her kids!

In 1989 at the age of 62 Mom retired. She was able to do some of the things she enjoyed, like China painting, she did Tai Chi, she was even one of the Mall Walkers at the Puente Hills Mall. I used to call her each morning and would have long conversations about her youth, she often spoke of her teen years as well. She told me about riding in cars with rumble seats and going to the movies with friends. She told me how she took care of her younger siblings because she was the oldest girl in the family, and how she had to get ice for their icebox but it was too heavy for her to carry, so she would drag it home and how angry it would make her mom to have dirty ice. She was even a Rosie-The-Riveter. She had an interesting life to say the least. When she spoke of her adult life as a wife and mother the stories took a different turn. Those were sad and painful years and it broke my heart to hear all she had gone through. But leaving that awful man and trying to make it on her own with her children was the wisest decision she ever made and she had no regrets. That’s why this quote by Linda Wooten is so appropriate: “Being a single Mom is learning about strengths you didn’t know you had .... and dealing with fears you didn’t know existed.” She is missed by all who knew her. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of her and remember those long talks we shared..... she was an extraordinary woman. Any woman can be a Mother, but it takes an incredible one to be a Mom and a Dad. She’s the only parent I ever knew ♥️. Rest In Peace Mom, we’ll see you on the other side
My mom was born on Christmas day, a gift to her family and friends. She was a kind and loving person who was the closest thing to an angel I will ever know. She was the Best mother anyone could ever hope for, making countless sacrifices for her children. Family first was a concept that she lived by.
She was a devoted daughter, sibling, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to all who were fortunate to have known and loved her. Her death has left a void in all our lives, and we miss her every day. Though I miss her immensely, I know that she is in heaven surrounded by peace and tranquility, and watching over us.
She was a devoted Catholic, and worked in the former food and job bank as well as the church store at Saint John Vianney. She created altar scarves and stoles for the priest, and provided orchids for Saint John Vianney church from her gardens.
She was a multi-talented person who was more than an excellent seamstress, but rather a designer. She could look at a picture and create beautiful wedding dresses, and formal attire.
One glance at her china painting creations, and you are immediately aware of her amazing talent. She won first place in china painting at the L A County Fair for an English cottage scene.
She was an excellent photographer and developed her own pictures. She dabbled in jewelry making and took computer classes. She was an exceptional gardener, especially with her beloved orchids. She could crotchet and knit by simply viewing an item. She crotched and knitted numerous scarves, baby blankets, booties, and hats.
She loved her music and had a sweet tooth for ice cream, chocolate candy and cookies.
She was a strong, hard working woman, who would never quit, she was a fighter until the end. She was loved, adored and admired by all who knew her. Thank you, mom, Robert and I love you, we will always love you. Please hold a place for us, until we meet again.
