Ricky's obituary

Ricky Gregory Perry, Sr., of Chesapeake, Virginia, was born on August 12, 1957, to the late Willard Perry, Sr. and to the late Evelyn Wynn Perry. After a tumultuous two-month recovery journey from a stroke, it is with profound sadness and much love that we mourn the sudden passing of Ricky on Sunday, April 30 at the age of 65 years.

He is survived by his eight siblings Myra Evans, (Deleno), Willard Perry, Jr. (Cheryl), Rosia Rawles (Roland), Eugene Perry (Doretha), Chris Perry, Gina Moss (James), Patrick Perry, Sr. (Freda), and Pandy Perry; his adored four children Ricky Perry, Jr., Rickita Taylor, Ricarlo Perry, and Rickeem “Aaron” Perry; and his four beloved grandchildren Da’Quay Perry, Mekhia Perry, Elijah Perry, and Michael Hana Dudley.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Angelnita Askew-Perry; his six stepchildren JaMēs Askew-Swindell, Joy Askew, Jared Askew, Jerica Askew, Jason Askew, and Jayvon Askew; five step grandchildren (one predeceased); and a great host of nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends, and colleagues.

Ricky graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1975. He had an incredible knack for mechanics, working as a welder, hydraulics technician, and driver for the United States government. He settled into retirement in 2021, however, he worked as a facility maintenance worker at Slover Library, in Norfolk, which he deeply enjoyed. He would consider himself a talented cook and grill master. Ricky was an avid fan of history, westerns, and sports--specifically the Washington football team. He loved his family and friends immensely.

Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home in Chesapeake, Virginia will hold a homegoing service on Tuesday, May 9th at 10:00 am. The service will be followed by a Celebration of Life “cook out” in Ricky’s honor at Eugene and Doretha Perry’s residence, located at 3028 Tidewater Drive Norfolk, Virginia at 1:00 pm.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to his close friend Charles “Chucky” Haggins, who spent countless hours at his bedside, and friends of the family, CNA Keishara McClarty and Cardiac Technician Tracey Williams for overseeing his care at times while he remained in the hospital and rehabilitation center.
