I miss you Rick, not just your help with my hummingbird pictures but as my birding companion through many years and in many places.

Rick’s interests were not just birds but all of nature, specifically ferns, butterflies, moths and trees. Over the years we enjoyed many trips to Point Pelee to catch the arrival of the spring migrants. We slept in your old van for many years, eventually graduating to tenting with the Hamilton Naturalist Club birders group.

Ontario got too predictable, so we looked further afield for our adventures. Many memorable trips through the years including Colorado with Joe Rothermand, Arizona and California, a Mexico tour with George Bryant and Sid and John Olmstead, the Yucatan with John Olmstead, Jim Heslop and several trips to south Texas. There were also two trips to Ecuador, one with South Texas birders and with Ontario birders Dave Elder, Barry Jones, Jim Heslop and myself. Eventually our trips were to May and Ricks winter home in South Texas where we enjoyed plant, butterfly and birding walks in a new state park.

I will treasure all the memories of visits with Rick and May, both at their McKenzie Lake cottage and their trailer in South Texas.

Memories of our friendship and travels live on in photos - I still miss you Rick.

Rick and I were colleagues in the science department of Sir Wilfrid Laurier S.S., Hamilton, from 1971 to 1975.    Since we lived in the same neighbourhood in West Hamilton, Rick and his family on Beulah, we on Chedoke, we occasionally commuted to school together.    My memories of Rick are those of a consummate and dedicated teacher, with a calm and soft-spoken demeanour, of which both his students and his colleagues were the beneficiaries.    Our heartfelt condolences to the family.
