Richard's obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Richard Lawrence Simms, who entered into eternal rest on May 1, 2023. Born on September 12, 1966, to Ronald Simms and Linda Quate Simms. Richard, as he was affectionately known, preferred to be called Rick or Ricky.

Richard is survived by his loving family, including his daughters, Amber Whiteside and Kali Por; son-in-law, Darren "Lukas" Whiteside; partner, Deborah "Lynn" Bird; mother, Linda Simms; brother, Michael "Mick" Simms; aunts, Marlene Wheelhouse(Carl), Beverley Spivey, Trudy Samuels; Aunt in Love and her family, JoEllen Wheelhouse and Jody Reed(Shawn and Erin Kate) ; and numerous Canadian Cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Ronald Simms; cousin, David "Seth" Spivey; uncles, Fred D. Spivey and Ellis "Junie" Samuels Jr.; grandmother, Elsie Quate; and grandfather, Francis Quate.

Richard was a proud graduate of Matoaca High School in Chesterfield, VA, class of 1984. An avid fisherman, he had several fishing awards and trophies to his name. He spent many days on the water, and had many "honey" holes but his favorite place was Kerr Lake or "Buggs Island". Rick enjoyed hunting with his daughter, Amber and son in law, Lukas. He also loved classic cars and classic rock music.

Those who knew Richard would describe him as accountable, authentic, bold, helpful, humble, innovative, loud, and outgoing. Rick never knew a stranger, and would always lend a hand to anyone in need. He believed strongly in always being a leader and never a follower, a lesson he passed on to those around him. Richard's legacy will be one of kindness and generosity.

In his later years, Ricky found solace and happiness on his 15-acre property, where he cared for his flock of chickens, newest piglet Sassy, and beloved dog Baylee. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandpuppy, Benelli "Bean", whether it be playing in the creek or Go Kart rides on his property.

Richard's memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He will be sorely missed, but his lessons and love will remain with us forever. May he rest in eternal peace.
