Richard's obituary

Richard Stanley Runowski (Ryszard Stanisław Runowski), 91 y/o, passed away on 04 February 2022 at Trillium Mississauga Hospital. He was the widower of Barbra L. Runowski (née Wilkinson), mother of his two children, and Joyce E. Runowski (née Rigby). He is survived by his children Glen Runowski and Angela Runowski, his grandchildren, Heather Mateus, Jeffrey Mateus, Kyle Runowski and Devin Runowski, and his great grandchildren, Isaiah Mateus and Skyler Hudon.

Born in Poland on 04 March 1930, he was the son of Kapitan Mitchell (Mieczysław) and Angela (Aniela) Runowski. As a pre-teen in World War II, Richard ran guns and ammunitions for the Polish Underground Resistance to help combat the Nazis occupying Poland. At some point during the Occupation, he was able to escape Poland for England, where he joined the Royal Merchant Navy College in London. After studying at the College, Richard, in his late teens years, left England for Canada, sailing across the Atlantic on The RMS Empress of Canada. Once in Canada, he found himself in Toronto, working various full-time jobs while also attending night classes at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute. After much hard work, Richard ended up proudly serving with The Fire Marshalls Office of Ontario for 10+ years.

In 1958, Richard married his first wife, Barbra. They went on to have two children, Glen (b. 1960) and Angela (b. 1964), raising them in Mississauga. After his wife tragically passed in 1984, Richard was able to find love again with his second wife, Joyce, in 1985.

In his older years, Richard lived a relatively quiet life, finding joy in his hobby of amateur video production and spending time with his grandkids. He enjoyed yearly family gatherings, celebrating important dates and holidays congregating around the table with his loved ones. He will be dearly missed.

The visitation and funeral service will be held on Friday February the 11th, 2022, visitation 10:00am-11:00am, funeral service 11:00am-12:00pm, at St. Johns Dixie Cemetery & Crematorium - 737 Dundas St E, Mississauga, ON L4Y 2B5 with interment 12:00pm-1:00pm at Mt. Peace Cemetery - 33204 Cawthra Rd, Mississauga, ON L5A 2X6
