Dick was born on May 18, 1940 in Wadena Minnesota, the first (and best) of 5 children by Albert and Ann. Shortly after he was born, they moved to Calumet, MN, where, after a couple of years his sister Hazel and brother Robert joined them. In 1945, his family moved to North Germany Township, where soon there were two more siblings, Larry and Roger.
Dick graduated from Sebeka High School in 1958. After high school, Dick worked in Minneapolis where he met his wife Pat, who roomed with his cousin. They were married in 1963 and made their home in North Germany Township. He continued working in Minneapolis doing carpentry, masonry, building pools, and general contracting.
In 1975, Pat and Dick purchased 20 cows, and the family began dairy farming. The farm and herd grew, and renovations were made, finally ending in putting in a lagoon. This led him to lagoon pumping as a side business. He retired from farming and continued to concentrate on lagoon pumping until passing on the business to his son in the early 2000’s.
His retirement was spent winemaking, gardening, cooking, baking cookies and buying John Deere garden tractors off craigslist. He was very proud of and bragged about his children often. His philosophy was “Work hard, play hard!” and he always thought he was right! He was a jack of all trades, teacher, innovator, inventor, and deer hunter. He always enjoyed a houseful of family and friends. Dick had a big heart and took care of his family.
