I wish I had more time with Dick, who was my sister Mindy’s father in law. Although I would spend time with the family for holiday and various social fun activities, the first must have been the wedding of my sister Mindy to Bruce Ortquist. I have come to know Bruce as a fine brother, which tells me his father was a very similar man! Intelligent, kind, caring and just as humorous and fun to hang out with among any and all circumstances!
My last memory of Dick was the. fabulous birthday party for my sister Mindy, where many friends and family shared loving memories and non stop laughs-truly a Kaiser and Ortquist tradition!
Rest In Peace 🙏

I'm so sorry we can't make it to the virtual celebration of Dick's life. He was such a wonderful colleague and friend, and I have lots of fond memories of hanging out at Kiwanis with him in downtown Springfield, traveling to Washington DC for a marathon session of interviewing candidates, just chatting in the hallway before class. Here are two photos from 2012 (Hartje's birthday bash at Wittenberg). The unstaged group photo is one of my favorites as it catches all those wonderful people in an unscripted way!
Todd also sends his condolences. Dick and Caty were fun hosts for a number of parties at their house!

Dear Leslie and Bruce,
I hardly knew Dick, only met him at two occasions. But I think that the father of two such wonderful people must have been a good person with love to share.
My thoughts are with Bruce and Leslie and their families. I have a lot of fond and wonderful memories of my brother that I will always treasure. Love you lots is how we alway ended our telephone calls and I will miss doing that. I know you are happy and at peace. Sharon your little sister.

Dick memorized one song to play on the piano when we were young. It was the Maori Farewell Song, which we knew as "Now is the Hour." If you're old enough, you'll remember the first words of the chorus are:
"Now is the hour when we must say goodbye..." So, dear brother, I'll
say goodbye, with much love, until we meet again.
Dr Ortquist was one of if not my favorite professors. We had the love for that yellow M in common and needed to stick together. I remember my favorite class was a post WW2 class and we had a keg party at his place. It was of coursed 60s themed. What a fun time. I remember during our final that Spring he left us in the final exam to go pick up Caty at the airport for his wedding. A year or so later we were sharing a beer and I asked him with such a busy weekend how did you grade those exams and get married. He looked at me and laughed than let me know the real reason he could leave early. our grades had already been turned in before we even took the final.

He was an inspiration and a person i learned more than just history from. He taoght me many life lessons

Mindy and Bruce, I enjoyed Dick as a friend for many years! From my time at Witt to more recently socially. He was always ready for a joke or to share a bit of history. I so enjoyed all the special times I had with he and my very special friend, Caty! I am sending my sincerest sympathy to each of you!
With Deepest Sympathy in the loss of a loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather.

My heartfelt condolences to Leslie and Bruce and their families and also to Dick's stepchildren and their families. Dick was a wonderful Wittenberg colleague and very much appreciated academic adviser to my wife, Nancy, who completed her bachelor's degree and history major as one of the few "adult' learners in the department at the time. He was one her very favorite professors. I especially remember working closely with Dick during his stint as Interim Provost and his role during that year as a member of President Kinnison's Executive Staff . He was totally involved and tirelessly engaged in the efforts to keep students and faculty at the very center of the university's focus and mission. Dick was a good friend, a great colleague, and most importantly, we both had degrees from the University of Michigan and shared a devotion to all things "blue".
I had him in 1980 at Witt. 'US History since 1945". He challenged us. Poked us. Divided us. Argued with us. First Prof I had that was openly to the Left. Coming from Cleveland?? I struggled initially. But then opened my mind... And never closed it again.
RIP.
You made alot of us better people...
One of my favorites. Loved his sense of humor. Barbara Cubbage Tucker '72
I am old enough to know the time is coming for us all. I have great memories of Dick who interviewed me when I was a candidate for a position at Wittenberg. He was a great fellow faculty member at Witt.
