Background
Education played a powerful role in Dick's life. It allowed him to fulfill his dad's dream for him that he have a job where "he didn't have to carry a lunchbox" (though we think he still often took his own lunch to work!), and it opened up a world of ideas and possibilities for him as a first-generation student from a working class family. He worked hard not only at his studies, but also to finance his education through part-time jobs on campus and factory jobs in summers at home where he had to pay his parents rent out of his earnings. His own professional life, first as a high school teacher and later as a college professor, was devoted to the education, development, and mentoring of others--students and colleagues alike.
Berea College (Leslie's employer) exists to serve students like Dick, students with great promise, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college and all of whom arrive with great financial need. Berea awards every student a full tuition scholarship so that all graduate with little to no debt and with a good education. It is also an institution with a strong liberal arts core, something that mattered to Dick.
Your donations to the College's "Berea Fund" made in lieu of flowers complements monies drawn from the endowment and from federal and state grants and makes the "no tuition promise" possible for students like Dick. For more information, see https://www.berea.edu/give/why-give/
Dick devoted his own long and meaningful career to Wittenberg University. While there is no possibility to donate directly through this Ever Loved site, if you would find a contribution to Wittenberg in lieu of flowers more meaningful, we would encourage you to consider that option, and we would love to hear from you about it so that we can share our gratitude on Dick's behalf. https://www.wittenberg.edu/giving/wittenberg-fund Contribute to Berea College
