Rick's obituary
On March 28, 2024, Richard Frank Matson, better known as Rick to family and friends, was lost to colon cancer while at home, surrounded by those he loved most. Known for his hard work, loyalty, witty humor and passion for golf, Rick was born on April 26, 1950 and lived a life full of family, friends, laughter and love.
Rick is survived by his devoted wife, Cindi Matson with whom he shared 47 years of marriage and three children; Mike Matson, Katie Belling Matson and Kim Matson. He thoroughly enjoyed having son-in-law Travis Belling join the family; and spending time with his two grandsons, Tyson and Owen Belling who brought infinite joy to his later years.
Born in Seattle, WA during the 'baby boom', Rick played on baseball teams as a boy and had a talent for singing. Always up for a good time or a good prank, Rick was also very thoughtful and intelligent. Rick wasn’t the loudest person in the room, but when he had something to say it was of value and respected- and often clever, accompanied by his trademark grin.
Rick was predeceased by his father, Frank Matson at a young age and his mother, Mary Matson in more recent years. He was a big brother to Steve Matson and a brother-in-law to Mike, Lynette, Jim, Sheri, Al and Jodi Corwin; a tight knit group who made family gatherings and holidays always a great time. Whether Rick was shooting pool, watching football or refereeing foosball tournaments, it was nonstop jokes and laughter with Rick around. Weekends at The Corwin Cabin on Mason Lake were particularly special; and where endless memories were made with family and friends. A down-to-earth, patient Dad; Rick got such a kick out of watching his kids grow, learn and experience new things- and his pride in them was evident.
Rick made a quiet impact in any setting with his easy-going presence- his good-natured attitude put others at ease and he never missed an opportunity to make others laugh with his wit and dry humor. His love for all things golf and sports was always a fun and easy conversation. His wit and humor is how he caught the attention of his future wife, Cindi, at a gathering in 1974. Making her laugh non-stop earned him her phone number- and they were married in 1976; together for the next half century.
Rick was a knowledgeable and highly skilled machine operator in the printing industry, working at the iconic Craftsman Press among others in Seattle, WA. Rick was hardworking and cross-trained in many aspects of the industry; taking time to train others, troubleshoot issues or help anyone who needed it- and was known for never taking a lunch! He retired as a Bindery Foreman after many decades of dedicated service.
