The First Time I Met Richard, Christmas 2021
It was Christmas 2021, and for the first time in my life, I wasn’t spending it with my immediate family. They were in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and though I tried to keep a brave face, there was an ache in my chest as the holidays approached. I didn’t quite know what to expect, but that all changed when I walked through the Luberda’s front door.
The warmth hit me before I even stepped inside, laughter, music, the smells of holiday cooking, and suddenly, I wasn’t just a guest at a party, I was part of something. The Luberda’s didn’t just welcome me; they embraced me.
And then there was Richard. "Hi, darling," he said, kissing me on the cheek and pulling me into a hug like I belonged there. Every time I came over after that, he always said “hi darling,” so sweet!
That Christmas, my glass was never empty (I’m sure Cole was behind that initiative), and neither was my heart. The house was full of people and love, and though I missed my family dearly, the Luberda’s made sure I never felt alone.
Looking back now, I realize that Christmas wasn’t about what I was missing, it was about what I gained from the Luberda family! ❤️
