Richard's obituary
Richard Elmo Haskins entered eternal rest Monday May 27, 2024 after an unexpected illness and hospital stay at Stanford Medical Center. During this time he was grateful to spend time with his Children, closest Friends and Family.
Richard was born January 4, 1946 in San Francisco, California to Bonnie Ricci and Arthur Stanley ‘Buzz’ Haskins Jr. He went on to attend Burlingame High School in the Class Of 1964. Upon graduation he began his career in the grading, excavating and earth moving industry at his Father’s namesake construction business. In its early years, the company completed a number of large scale public works as well as privately funded projects including the primary excavation and grading of Interstate 280, Interstate 380, Serramonte and Tanforan Malls as well as other key Bay Area developments.
As would be expected of someone with Richard’s drive and natural business acumen, he eventually took over management and operations alongside his Brother Arthur Lee Haskins after their Father’s passing in 1986. Under Richard’s leadership the company focused on large scale suburban developments including residential subdivisions, golf courses and Country Clubs in the East Bay Area. Some notable projects completed under Richard’s leadership include: Poppy Ridge Golf Course, Blackhawk Golf & Country Club, Norris Canyon Estates, Wiedemann Ranch, Crow Canyon Country Club, Ruby Hill Golf Club and Canyon Lakes Golf Course.
Richard touched the lives of many and counted hundreds of dear Friends near and far as a result of having touched down on nearly every continent during his time with us. He enjoyed traveling the globe chasing his passion of big game trophy and bird hunting having achieved greatness within the sport.
While Richard enjoyed traveling to faraway places where he shook hands with prominent figures he was most comfortable hunting his own land at his private waterfowl conservation property in Los Banos, California. It was here that his unique and colorful personality shined through while regaling his Sons, Grandsons and closest Friends with hunting stories, many of which would leave us in a fit of awe and laughter in the ensuing moments.
Richard’s success in anything he put his mind to is a testament to his strong willed nature which he demonstrated until the end as he fearlessly battled the illnesses which ultimately called him home to his Mother, Father, Brother, Friends and Family who predeceased him. His list of skills, traits and abilities are nearly infinite and speak volumes about the character underlying his indestructible exterior. He will be sorely missed and his legacy will live on for decades to come through the hundreds of people he had a positive impact on.
Richard is survived by his four children: Michelle Haskins-Gomez, Bonnie Lucille Haskins, Richard Haskins Jr. and Derek Richard Haskins. His love for his Grandchildren (Jacob, Dominic, Alexia, Maddox, and Scarlett) is immeasurable and will be felt and remembered by those fortunate to have had one of the coolest Grandfather’s to have ever walked the planet. In addition to his Children and Grandchildren, Richard leaves behind his sister-in-law Sandy Haskins and son-in-law Ramon Gomez.
A Memorial Mass is planned for Friday June 21, 2024 at 11 AM at Our Lady Of Angels Catholic Church.
