I was terrified as an 9yr old going to the 4th grade and getting of all teachers Mr.Hamm!!! That was 34 years ago. And I can honestly say I remember him as being one of the best teachers I ever had. As an adult, I can say with absolute certainty that he was also one of the best people I ever knew. He had a passion and assurance of purpose that most people are still seeking. He took pride in his students and he had integrity beyond reproach. He is and has been an example of excellence I myself strive to achieve. He didn't just teach us subjects. He taught us to be better people. His lessons stayed with you beyond the classroom. He is truly a loss. I wish there were more teachers like him today.

I was a student of Mr Hamm back in 2002. I visited him one time when I graduated high school and shared my dreams for the future. Everyone said he was the most terrifying teacher at Garden Villas, but it was not true. I found he was the most compassionate and dedicated to his job. He helped me get through the beginning of my parents divorce and consoled my mother when she broke down during a meeting. He solidified himself as my favorite teacher of all time, even now at the age of 32 I remember him fondly, and wished I had visited him before his retirement or even after so that I may share with him the progress I have made in life. I now work in law enforcement and carry the lessons he did with me today.

I was so sad to hear about his passing earlier this year I was looking at garden villas memories and came across this he was my 5th grade teacher (I am now a college student for reference) and he was so amazing at his job that I fell in love with math, that year I realized I was capable of so much thanks to him.

Oh little Richard!!! Mr. Hamm was my fourth grade teacher and he taught my two brothers fourth grade before he taught me. I used to go grab little Richard from kindergarten ( if I remember correctly) and walk him back to his dads class. Mr. Hamm was an awesome person with a great passion and a spectacular smile. He enjoyed when his former students came back to visit and could share what they were now doing with his current students. My brothers and I forever have certain things Mr. Hamm would say to us embedded in our memories. One was good, better, best, never let it rest, until your good is your better and your better is your best. I won’t forget the last time I came to visit GV and saw him. He was as welcoming as always. I wish he knew that I went on to become a neuropsychologist and to open my own clinical practice to help children! I know he would have been proud. Rest peacefully Mr. Hamm! This was shocking and sad news that I just learned about a few hours ago. Nonetheless, I am comforted in knowing we will see each other again! I would love to talk to little Richard (not little anymore lol) if anyone has his info!

It's so amazing that my brother had such an impact on your life and your brothers'lives as well.   Yes, I'm so sure that he would be so very proud of your accomplishments Mr. Williams! Just reading your comments that you posted makes me proud both of my brother and equally of the student whose life he touched in a such a special way. A neuropsychologist. That's so amazing! And to hear how you're likewise making a difference in children's lives today is wonderful! I know Richard would be so proud of you and what you've accomplished.  I'm so glad my brother made a difference in you and your brothers' lives and now you're making that same difference in helping others. Thank you so much for sharing the words that my brother spoke to you and your brothers that stuck with you over the years--good, better, best and not stopping until your good became your better, and your better became your best. Great words to aspire to.   I've spoken to Richard Jr. and although he states he doesn't remember you, he welcomes your call.  I've sent you a private message with Richard Jr.'s phone number.
