Richard's obituary

Richard A. Goodwin, 77, of Lebanon, NH, passed away on October 31, 2025, after courageously battling illness for 13 years, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on June 3, 1948, in Nashua, NH, to Mary Covey, he was the second oldest of ten children. He graduated from Lebanon High School in Lebanon, NH, in 1966, and went on to serve his country with great pride in the U.S. Army with the 583rd Ordnance Company in Germany from 1969 to 1972, as part of NATO's SASCOM tactical nuclear weapons group.

On November 3, 1973, he married Deborah O'Dea (now Goodwin), who remained his devoted companion and caregiver throughout his lengthy illness. Together they raised two sons: Timothy Goodwin (married to Wanda Goodwin), born in 1975, of Enfield, NH, and Scott Goodwin (partner Sara Ely), born in 1979, of Essex, VT.

After graduating from Nathaniel Hawthorne College in 1979, he ran the historic machine tool company K&D Manufacturing before following his passion for computers and technology, working first at ValleyNet and then at The Right Thing (later ADP) until his retirement in 2020.

He cherished his three beloved grandchildren: Ellie (2009), Seamus (2012), and Patrick (2014). His greatest joys included coaching t-ball and soccer games when his sons were young, working on projects around the house, exploring new technology, cheering on the Red Sox, doting on his family - especially his grandchildren - spending time at Lake Winnipesaukee, and taking Super Senior trips with the Lebanon Recreation Department with his wife and sister. He was known for his wonderful sense of humor, which remained with him even during his many health challenges.

He was predeceased by his brothers Gary, Thomas, and Harold; his sister Wendy; and his mother, Mary Carr. He is survived by his wife, Deborah; his sons Timothy and Scott and their families; his grandchildren; and his siblings Geneva Preble (husband Bob), Tammy Durand (husband Jeff), Margaret Dimmick, Tracy Carr (Dottie), and Jamie Carr (Joanne) as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the incredible team at Dartmouth Hitchcock, especially his care team at the Dartmouth Cancer Center, whose expertise and compassionate care gave him many precious years with his loved ones.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date at the NH Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Dartmouth Cancer Center at Medical & Healthcare Advancement, Attn: Gift Recording, One Medical Center Drive, HB 7070, Lebanon, NH 03756-0001, or online at https://dhmcalumdev.hitchcock….
