Richard's obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Paul Gagnon, who passed away on July 7, 2025, from pancreatic cancer at the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Center in Wilmington, NC. He was 77 years old.

Born on April 4, 1948, in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, Richard spent much of his childhood in Westminster, MD, where he attended St. John Catholic High School from 1st grade through 12th grade. His academic journey led him to Clemson University, where he earned a Master's Degree in Mechanical and Civil Engineering.

Richard's professional life was defined by his work as a supervisor for Stuart Connectors, W. R. GRACE, and American Continental where his innovative contributions as an engineer, including designing spice containers for McCormick, Inc. His career was marked not only by his technical expertise but by his dedication to excellence and his ability to mentor and guide those around him.

A man of deep faith, Richard was an active member of his parish at St. John Parish in Westminster, MD, where he served as a sponsor in the RCIA program, helping others on their spiritual journeys. He also devoted countless hours as a soccer and baseball coach for his sons, Kyle and Craig, instilling in them a love for sports and teamwork.

Richard had a passion for the outdoors, and he loved nothing more than backpacking, including traveling the Appalachian Trail. His love for nature extended to his backyard, where he found peace in gardening and joy in playing a round of golf with friends and family.

After retiring in 2006, Richard and his beloved wife Carla made Hampstead, NC their home. In Hampstead, Richard served on the Hampstead Pines Homeowners Association (HOA) board and was an active member of All Saints Catholic Church from the time they moved to the area until his recent illness, contributing his time and skills to improve the community he loved. Richard’s kindness, generosity, and commitment to helping others left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His warm heart and quiet strength will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Carla Gagnon; his sons, Kyle and Craig Gagnon; his brother, Neil Gagnon and sister-in-law, Kathy; his mother-in-law, Monalene; his stepchildren, Lisa, Christina, Angela, and Aaron; and many extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife Pamela, his stepson Ryan, and his parents, Darryl Gagnon and Margaret Bennett.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Center in Richard’s memory. Richard’s love for his family and his faith will be remembered always. May he rest in peace.
