Richard's obituary

Richard J Finnell passed away peacefully on February 4, 2019 with his family by his side. He was 81 years old.
Richard was born and raised in the Bronx, by the time he was 20 he had lost both his parents and raised his younger sister Kathy on his own.
He attended the High School of Industrial Arts and after graduation went to work for an Electrical Contractor. Eventually, through hard work and dedication, he was promoted to the position of Electrical Designer/Project Consultant. During his working years Richard was involved in the electrical design and installation of many notable New York landmarks such as the 1964 World’s Fair, Trump Tower, Madison Square Garden, the Jacob Javits Center, and the Queens Center Mall.
Richard and Mary Anne met at a dance and were married two years later. Family was always the most important thing to Richard therefore he dedicated a lot of time to his family, whether it was volunteering as a Boy Scout Leader for his son’s troop, attending his daughter’s many dance recitals or just spending time together on the many family vacations they took together . Richard was also very active in his parish, St. Paul the Apostle Church in Corona where he served as an usher, president of the Men’s Guild as well as a Trustee of the Church.
Richard lived in Corona for over 40 years, after retiring he was able to dedicate more time to his love of painting. He joined the Flushing Art League and his work received several awards. In the warm months Richard could be found selling his art work at “Spaghetti Park”, where his many customers remember him to this day.
When he moved to Mystic Pines in 2006 he described it as “the good life”. He took pride in being one of the first ones in the pool every season and was often found with a camera in hand at community events.
Richard was loved and adored by his 2 children, 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. His sense of humor, strength and perseverance will always be his legacy. Although his last years were difficult due to his failing health, he lived to hold his children’s children’s children, Michael and Vincent, which brought him enormous joy and pride.
