What a huge loss to all of us who loved and admired Dick! His astute political observations, his dedication to engaging in dialogue across every possible boundary, his indefatigable optimism, his tireless activism, his deep laugh which started in his eyes and moved into his belly, his wry humor...I could go on and on. All of this will be so dearly missed. We will forever, cherish his memory and dedicate renewed activism in his honor.

I did not know Dick super well and what I remember most about him is how open and curious and playful and kind and helpful / willing he was. We bonded over kundalini yoga music — Snatam Kaur —  and rollerblading in the early 2000s? I admired and resonated with his zest for life and his devotion  and admiration  for and support of Lina. A good man, a joyful, humble, generous  spirit: his sudden passing opens an abyss. Sending love and condolences to you, Lina, and family.
Dick was the only man who ever asked me what I was reading.  His "deep canvassing" -- open conversations with people who might disagree with him -- was inspiring.  His cooking was creative and delicious.  His eyes were lit with love when he talked about Lina, his son Nate, and the rest of his family.  Sid and I are so sad that he has died and we will miss him dearly.

In reading the chronicle of Dick's life of learning, offering, loving, joy and unending generosity, Dick is the exemplar of how my spiritual teacher defines the meaning of Life--it's to constantly expand and live life to its fullness, and to offer yourself in service to others.  In the midst of the intense grief at the suddenness of his passing, I celebrate Dick's exemplifying what it means to live Life.  May we learn from him for whatever days we have remaining: the meaning of Life is to live Life to its fullest and offer ourselves to others.
Lina and All -- wishing the best possible in Dick's passing. It stings in my heart to think of him gone. And, what a lovely man! I loved his love of learning and people in the way that I experienced him. Always curious. Always kind in that curiosity. Lighting a candle today to honor Dick. And to celebrate his vibrant ways. Dearest Lina,

I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Marcela shared the news with me and my heart felt the crush of your grief in that moment. I remember what a joy it was to be welcomed into your home after my long trip home from Vietnam, having conversation with you and Dick at your table, and feeling the warmth of your loving home. Sending you so much love and wishing you the space to be with your grieving in whatever way best serves you and your family.

May his memory bring you comfort and joy,

Tracy
