Richard "Dick"'s obituary

Richard "Dick" Crittenden, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and well-known auctioneer across Pennsylvania and New York, passed away peacefully at home on June 10, 2025, in Cape Coral, Fla.

Born in his grandparents' home in Coudersport to Thomas W. and Edna High Crittenden, Dick grew up in Mansfield, where he would later raise his own family and spend nearly five decades on E. Mulberry Hill before relocating to sunny Florida in 2004.

Dick married his high school sweetheart, Sheila Jean Brown, on March 27, 1954. Together, they built a loving home and shared a life rooted in commitment and community. He and Sheila were founding members of Child Evangelism Fellowship of Tioga County. They were generous with financial and leadership support to numerous Christian organizations.

Dick began his much-loved vocation in 1958 at the Horseheads Livestock Auction and Danville Auction. In 1961, he founded the Dick Crittenden Auction Company, conducting countless farm and construction equipment auctions throughout Pennsylvania and New York. Over the years, he worked a weekly circuit of livestock and auto auctions in Pavilion, Buffalo, Syracuse, Waterloo, and Bath, N.Y. He was also a founding partner of Expressway Auto Auction in Dansville, N.Y. His dedication and talent earned him numerous auctioneering awards throughout his long and successful career.

He is survived by his four daughters who brought him immense pride: Joy (Gary) Christian of Northumberland; Dr. Elizabeth (Betsy) (Mircea) Grigoriu of Ithaca, N.Y.; Marianne (Muray) Kent of Dunnellon, Fla.; and Lois (Charles) Rupar of Cape Coral, Fla. He was the treasured grandfather of ten: Jenny Christian (Kevin) Shroyer, Emily Christian (Shadoe) Daniels; Trapper (Viky) Wyman, Bogdan Grigoriu; Levi Kent, Marcus (Pepper) Kent, Nicholas (Jackie) Kent; Chad Rupar, Blake (Tina) Rupar and Abby Rupar (Corbin) Bare. Dick was also blessed with 13 beautiful great-grandchildren: Teagan and Emmett; Connor, Isabella, and Gabriella; Octavian and Victoriana; Bailey and Riley; Everett and Evelyn; Ryelynn and Calvin.

Dick is predeceased by his parents; his wife, Sheila; his sister, Marjorie Crittenden Brion; and his brother-in-law, Gary Cook. He is survived by his siblings, Linda Cook and Thomas F. (Jacqueline) Crittenden.

Dick's favorite way to relax was mowing the 70+ acres of his home on Mulberry Hill in Mansfield. He had a deep and intuitive knowledge of farming, cattle, horses, tractors, cars and engines. His greatest joy came from being with his family-especially as grandchildren and great-grandchildren arrived. He is remembered as a kind, caring and generous man-deeply devoted to those he loved and the communities he served.

A celebration of life will be held in August 2025. Further information will be shared at a later date.
