I was so sorry to hear about Richard's passing. He was such a educated music teacher!  I was impressed by his vast knowledge of music!
I don’t even know what to say. I’m gutted. He was one of the most important humans in my life, and easily the most influential musician. He was kind, intelligent, moral and passionate. I’m gutted. I continue to think of my Hintz family.

My deepest condolences to Sandra and family for the loss of this amazing man. Both he and Sandra made a huge impact in my life with the time they invested in me. I am forever grateful to both of them. The City of Otsego is a better place because of  their dedication to our community. Thank you.

I am so thankful for the special tribute that will be held to honor Dick…he is so deserving. I look forward to attending to celebrate shared memories of  his life. Much love to the family.

Sandy - I am very sorry for your loss!  I always appreciated my relationship with Dick.  I am thankful he passed peacefully.

Nick S.  PT - NovaCare

My deepest condolences to your family in the loss of your husband, father and great grandfather.

I’m very sad hearing of the passing of Mr.Hintz, my senior year choir teacher from OHS (-95). I have many times thought of how truly lucky I was to end up in Otsego, OHS and his class for my exchange student year in the US.

He is the single person who has had the greatest impact in my life when it comes to stage music. He opened a world of musical possibilities and understanding for me, which I am forever grateful for.

On my journey of life on this planet, I am grateful to have crossed paths with Mr.Hintz.

His work and caring persona had an immense impact on my life and continues to live with me and I’m grateful to be able to pass on things he taught me to my children.

Music from him, will be heard for generations.

I'll never forget the day that Mr Hintz came into 7rh grade study hall looking for men to join choir, and I will never regret saying yes. As it started me on that path with him. The late nights painting sets for the musicals. My first with him was Camelot my freshmen year. And the medieval dinners. Then after he retired taking voice lessons, and being scolded for not practicing enough, and Mrs Hintz telling him to be nice.

There are very few people in my life that made an impact on me like he did. Teaching me how hard work, and passion for what you do can make something amazing that is meant to be shared. Especially music. Dick was an amazing human being, that taught me how to take a god given talent (as I was terrible at practicing) , and share it with anyone who would listen. He will be greatly missed.

And for those who knew him well, good morning, its always morning somewhere.

Dearest Hintz Family- What can we say that no one really already knows about him. I had him for Choir in Otsego right before he retired than mr.moore took over. What a amazing voice and talent he had and he was always so positive. May you find comfort in our Great Lord at this time.
There's no other teacher I remember more fondly than Mr. Hintz, who I had as a choir teacher from 8th-12th grade (class of 1977). He worked tirelessly to bring out the best in all of us. He directed a musical each school year, and then he would do it again in the summer. He may not have had papers to grade like other teachers, but he single handedly kept 100+ students, from the leads and their parts to the chorus, dancers, scenery, lighting, make-up, publicity, and ticket sales, focused in order to bring an excellent production year after year. I had the privilege of participating in seven of his productions and couldn't have asked for a better experience. I am beyond sad by this news and send hugs out to all those affected by his passing. I will always remember his motivational cartwheels!!
So sorry for your loss. He was an amazing teacher. I loved having him as my Choir teacher. Even when I felt to shy to sing he helped me out and made me feel confident.  I still remember the farewell concert we did for him when he retired from OHS ♥️♥️♥️
So sorry to hear of your loss, Sandy and family. Dick was a great neighbor, loved his gardens and joking about the Norwegian spruce in the front yard.
Sandy and family - May God comfort and sustain you through these challenging times.  I am so sorry to read that you are needing to go through this challenging and painful loss in your life.

An amazing , inspiring  teacher and human being . I’m sure that heaven is singing with him there. 🎵🎶🎵

RIP Mr Hintz ❤️

I am so sorry for your loss. Your father is the reason I teach music. His love of music, his love of teaching inspired so many students. I have been in a choir of some kind since high school. He was an inspiration for so many.

Robin Boeling (Venen)

Sarah I am deeply sorry to hear about your dad. He was one of my most influential teachers I will remember him forever. Keeping you held in prayer.

Dear Cara and Family.  My deepest condolences to you and your loved ones in the of your beloved father.  May you find comfort in your best memories of times with your dad.  He sounded like an amazing man and I am sincerely sorry for your loss.

Love, Adirondack Julie

There's simply no way to overestimate this man's influence in my life. He opened my ears to music and my eyes to the stage... so much so that I was crazy enough to try and make a career of it. He showed me it's OK to be odd. That weirdness is sometimes just misdiagnosed creativity. He taught me to look for beauty in all things, and encouraged me to try and be a better person.

To his family, the best condolence I can offer up during this time of loss is the assurance that the thousands of stories, mine and so many others, will be the echo that carries his voice on. All honor to that now silent, but no less beautiful, voice.

Mr. Hintz didn't just teach music but he taught his students confidence, a sense of value and gave us a path to find joy in life. He was a remarkable man and we are all blessed to have spent a bit of time with him. He will be missed greatly but leaves a legacy behind that is lasting.

Dick was the best of the best.  He was a man with a beautiful, passionate soul.  I am grateful for knowing and working with him.  Rest in peace, you will be missed, but your influence will live on.

Kathy Kuipers

We were lucky to have him in our lives.

Julie, one of my fondest memories of your dad  was of the ride back from E. Lansing after he and Chuck sweated an afternoon away building that cussed loft for the MSU Shaw Hall room you and Becky shared.

I sat in the back seat while the guys up front cried on and off the whole ride home.  There was no attempt to hide how hard it was to say goodbye to their girls.

Mr. Hintz was amazing. Him and his class honestly were the only reason I didn't drop out of school. I was the only place In a day where I felt joy. Every now and again I still belt out Many Mumbling Mice out of the blue.  Heaven has gained an amazing man and he will be missed. My prayers go out to the family.

Prayers to the hintz family.. he was a great teacher.. I enjoyed having him as my teacher
The world lost an amazing human this week.
Richard Hintz, former Otsego High School Choir director, Choir coordinator for the Tri-country area, composer, architect (designed and built 3 of his homes) and artist passed away earlier this week.

Dick was a spirited, hardworking, energetic teacher, often talked into doing cartwheels in class before we would sing for him.

He spoke in class with an operatic voice, like the actor of Werner Klemperer, who played Colonel clinch on Hogan's heroes.

He frantically taught all day, and then after school, directed choir rehearsals, musical rehearsals and staying to paint scenery flats and build and paint props until long after supper.
For years and years.

Dick encouraged me to join choir in high school, and I got much of my early music education from him in music class, choir and the Otsego singers.

Dick would often write me passes to get out of study hall so I could go to the music rooms and play piano (I had no instrument back then).
Without that opportunity, o might never have played.

When I was a senior, Dick was also directing choir at Nazareth College.
I had a singing duo and he asked us if we wanted to perform at one of their functions and I said "yes!" Immediately.

I had performed in public with my father as a kid, but I always felt like my father was a crutch, and I wanted to stand on my own.
Performing at Nazareth College was one of my first "big gigs" and was a life-changer for me.

Over the years, Dick and I became good friends, keeping in touch first with phone calls, postcards, letters, and later via email and Facebook

When I came to Michigan, I would often visit with him and his wonderful family, Sandra, Julie, Cara, and Sarah.
Dick was an excellent cook as well as being accomplished in so many other fields.

When we moved to Michigan again in 2015, Dick and Sandra met us at our new house and helped us move in and clean up our new house.

We enjoyed many wonderful times with the family, and Dick and Sandy were kind enough to stand in as "grandparents" to Wolfgang, and attended several of his shows.

Dick was a true renaissance man.
Probably born in the wrong place at the wrong time, (like anympolymath) but he made a beautiful life for himself and his family, and I'm thankful for having known him.

When you're a kid with dreams, sometimes you can count on your parents to be behind you, and support you.
But support can mean a lot more when a total stranger believes in you and also supports your dreams.

The last time I saw Dick, he was not in very good shape and in port spirits.
He was tired and in a lot of pain.
I'm sad that he's gone, I will miss him and his advice, his sense of humor, his smile and his laughter, but I believe that he is at peace now.

RIP Dick
Dick was and still is, an inspiration to all that met him. His family is a true "artist " family through music and dance. The performances he got out of his students,(through all the chaos) was amazing! He brought out confidence in his students they may not have had for themselves.  I am extremely thankful he was a part of my family's life. My children through music, and myself helping with costumes and makeup  for musicals.  (I still can't believe he talked me into sewing 85 Grecian togas.) He will truly be missed by family, friends and students.  However, he lives on in all of us. Dick has gone on but he will never truly die. He lives on in a legacy of music, through the students he taught and the people that loved him. We were all very lucky to have him touch our lives.
I will always be grateful to Mr. Hintz for his knowledge, leadership and inspiration when I was in high school choir. He believed in me when I didn't always believe in myself. My prayers are with Sandy and all the family. Rest in Peace Sir Richard.
