Richard's obituary
BOYCE, Richard Wayne “Rick”
February 24, 1954 – June 4, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Wayne “Rick” Boyce, who died peacefully on June 4, 2025, at the age of 71. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, on February 24, 1954, Rick moved to Nova Scotia around age 9 and built a life marked by service, skill, and deep love for his family and community.
Rick served proudly as a volunteer firefighter with the Wellington – Fletcher’s Lake Fire Department, rising through the ranks to serve as Fire Chief. He was also an active member of the Fall River Lions Club, always eager to lend a hand and support community initiatives.
He was a man of many passions and talents. He made friends wherever he went and whatever he did. Rick raced cars, played and coached men’s fastball and hockey, and had a long and respected career as a tire salesman. He was smart, handy, and a true do-it-yourselfer who always seemed to know how to get a job done right. He was also a merchant mariner in his youth, serving aboard the vessel now known as HMCS Sackville, and remained a lifelong World War II history enthusiast.
His Irish heritage and family roots meant a great deal to him. He devoted time and energy to tracing the family’s history across North America and especially looked forward to the annual family reunions at Chapel Grove, New Brunswick.
Rick found joy in simple pleasures—fishing and hunting with his sons, time on the water, or cheering (and occasionally cursing) his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. He had a sharp sense of humor, a love of storytelling, and a deep loyalty to those he cared about.
He was predeceased by his father, Richard “Dick” Boyce, and his mother, Darline Boyce (née Priddle).
Rick is survived by his long-time partner, Cheryl; his children: Richard (Samantha), Christopher (Roselyn), Sarah (Richard), Patrick (Krystle), and Jackie; Cheryl’s sons—Brandon, Joshua, and Dakota—whom Rick proudly raised as his own; his brothers, Stephen (Kerstin) and Michael; and his grandchildren: Kassy, Toby, Dustin, Christopher, Christoffe, Patrick, and Keanu. He is also survived by his very special dog, Max, who rarely left his side.
Cremation has taken place, according to Rick’s wishes. A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Anglican Church, Fall River, at 1 PM on June 19, 2025. The service will include an Honour Guard from Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency in recognition of Rick’s dedicated service and leadership as Fire Chief. A reception will follow at the Wellington – Fletcher’s Lake Station House, 4132 Highway 2, Wellington.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
