Richard's obituary

Richard Bennett Jones, 93, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2022, in Las Vegas, NV. He was born on August 7, 1929, in Big Spring, Texas to Robert and Josephine Jones. Richard spent his childhood in West Texas as one of 5 children, graduating High School in Odessa, TX.

Richard was an officer in the US Army and served in the Korean War. After returning from service in 1953, he and his older brother, Robert, came to Hibbing, MN where they owned and operated J & J Castings for many years. He married the love of his life, Shirley Rae Johnson, in December of 1954. Together they raised three children, Debra, Rick, and Mark. He lived in Hibbing just short of 70 years.

In his later years, he loved spending time at Harriet Lake - riding on his pontoon boat and sitting by the banks of the St. Louis River in Floodwood with a line in the water. What he will be remembered for most however, is his love and devotion to his family and his love for people. He enjoyed nothing more than sitting with a cup of coffee, talking to his friends and family. Richard was an amazing storyteller and kept everyone he met entertained.

After being completely devoted to the care of his wife, Shirley Rae Jones, during a prolonged illness, Richard was preceded in death by her in 2018 as well as by his parents, Robert Howard Jones Sr and Josephine Elizabeth Booth, two sisters, Mary Frances Jones and Betty Fay Vawter, and two brothers, Robert Howard Jones Jr and Dewey Wendell Jones.

He is survived by his children, Debra Pittman of Las Vegas, NV; Rick (Leydy) Jones of Rock Springs, WY; and Mark (Loretta Peterson) Jones of Esko, MN. He was a caring Tud to Amanda (Bryan) Drangin of Brighton, MI; Austin Pittman of Oakland, CA; Paden (Hannah Lofgren) Pittman of Seattle, WA; Jesse (Amy) Pittman of Olympia, WA; and Alyssa (Dylan Linde) Pittman of Las Vegas, NV, and to his great grandchildren: Bennett, Chase, Dylan, Noah and Simon, as well as Uncle to many nieces and nephews. All cherish him and will miss him every day
