Richard's obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard G. Bangs, who left us on March 13, 2025. Born on July 14, 1936, Richard lived a fulfilling and rich life filled with generosity, kindness, and humor.

Richard found profound joy in making those around him comfortable and happy at all times. His infectious laughter and caring, witty personality will always be remembered. Richard leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Cora Bangs, their children Tamara Sackett and Christopher Bangs, their respective spouses Richard Sackett and Rhianna Bangs, and his granddaughters, Hannah Taylor and Michelle Sackett, and grandson, Kellan Bangs.

Richard had a long and admirable career in a variety of capacities that included Underwater Acoustics and Advanced Development, achieving  2 patents for the InkJet printer, and IT administrator for a small manufacturing business.  He excelled in serving the community, volunteering at the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 2-2. His commitment  was unparalleled, and he spent many fulfilling and rewarding years with the organization. He especially enjoyed teaching the Young Boaters course, and loved helping people learn.

His free time was often filled with the warm laughter of a good Bingo game and heading up the Maintenance Committee for many years for the community in which he lived, as well as playing piano and organ, and nothing brought him greater peace than sailing on tranquil waters. Richard's love for sailing anywhere was matched only by his passion for service.

The cause closest to Richard's heart was volunteering with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. We invite all who wish to honor Richard's memory to make a donation to the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 2-2 at 508 Old Taughannock Blvd, Ithaca, NY 14850 in lieu of flowers. Please let his legacy live on through the causes he cared about so deeply.

In retirement, Richard enjoyed travel via River Boat Cruising through Europe. He enjoyed his family and was especially happy upon visiting with his grandchildren. He also loved writing simple, amusing poems that made everyone laugh. As time passed and he needed assistance, he was very happy and at peace in the ALF where he resided for 2.5 years.

To all who knew him, Richard Bangs was a beacon of kindness and light, and his love, warmth, and humor will forever continue to inspire us all. We take comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to sail on, bringing happiness and comfort wherever he goes.
