Mark Simms
1994, Richmond, Virginia, USA

I first met Ricardo during my first visit to Virginia Union University in 1992. His family was the first one in the parking lot, and my family pulled up right behind his family. We quickly established the connection with our Jamaican roots and that New York, New Jersey connection. We had a bond since then. We also stayed in the same dorm and played on the football team together. Rock was a competitor and in practice, we would hit each other as hard as possible and continued to come back for more. That physical and mental toughness made us even closer.

Rock was a head of the game. He used to call me Johnny Blade and around our senior year, he would say, “Blade, it’s time to ditch the timberland boots and we have to get ready for the business world.” I followed his words and his footsteps and became more mature and adopted the business attire similar to him. I truly appreciated that because he was right.

When I met my girlfriend, who is now my wife of 21 years, Rock knew I had a good woman and confirmed my feelings. They got along very well too. Not only were we close with Rock but close with Jamila too. They trusted us so much that we baby sat beautiful little Zuri when she was a baby.

Rock, you will be missed my brother and we love you! My heart goes out to Jamila, Zuri, Renee, and the entire family. Rest in Paradise my brother!

Ricardo was a very hard-working family man and positively influenced the community.  It saddens me to know he is no longer with us, he will missed dearly.
