Rey Ortiz, born on May 18, 1965, passed away on February 25, 2024. A steadfast and jovial presence in his community, his memory will be revered by the many lives he touched.
Rey leaves behind a loving family including his wife, Veronica Ortiz and his ex-wife Sofia Ortiz. His family was his world, and he was a proud father to his children: Diana Ortiz, Rachel Ortiz, Rey Ortiz Jr, and Scarlette Ortiz. His family expanded with his step-children, Diana Ruiz and Martin Ruiz. His joy knew no bounds when he became a grandfather to Enzo Ortiz. He was predeceased by his parents, Delia Garcia Osorio and Carmelo Ortiz Rosario.
An alumnus of Polytechnic High School, Rey was a proud Sun Valley graduate of the class of 1984. He found employment at Weber-Millbrook Bakery in 1988 and later, at Unified, from where he retired in 2017. His work ethic was undisputed, and his commitment to his job was notable, contributing significantly to his achievements.
Throughout his life, Rey had varied interests that demonstrated the fullness of his personality. A big fan of music, especially Elvis and oldies, he also had a penchant for all things action, comedy, and horror when it came to the silver screen. An active sports enthusiast, he was a dedicated fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and enjoyed playing baseball and Punch Buggy’s. A man of simple pleasures, Rey was a true foodie some of his favorite dishes arroz con gandules, pasteles verdes, chuletas de puerco, and ropa vieja. He always requested his daily coffee and on occasion an ice-cold Corona.
Despite his busy schedule, Rey always found time for his recreational activities, such as being a car enthusiast, a lottery gambler, and watching boxing. He cherished spending quality time with his family. He was an avid reader, with Los Angeles Daily News and LA Times being his favorite reads. His love for animals was indisputable and was a cause he deeply cared about.
People who knew Rey were inspired by his incredible personality. Always donning a smile, his sense of humor was infectious. His strong work ethic, sense of responsibility, and staunch commitment to family are lessons that will stay with those he left behind. Above all, Rey considered his children as his greatest accomplishment, reflecting his profound bond with his family.
Rey's legacy is a testament to his generous spirit and readiness to lend a helping hand. His memory will continue to live in the hearts of the people whose lives he enriched. The loss is enormous, but Rey's love and memories will forever be cherished. He was gone too soon but will forever remain in our hearts.
