Rev. Paul's obituary

Glens Falls, NY- Paul Fredric Evans, 86, died on Wednesday, March 6, 2024.

A native of Elizabeth, NJ, he was born in 1937, the son of Paul Alexander and Mildred Sutter Evans. He attended Drew University and graduated from the University of Buffalo. A postgraduate degree in Sacred Theology was awarded, cum laude, by the Episcopal seminary in New Haven, CT.

Fr. Evans was ordained deacon at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Buffalo, NY, where he served his curacy. Thereafter he was ordained priest at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, CA. In that diocese he served Auxiliary Priest, Grace Cathedral, Vicar of the church in Antioch, Associate at St. John the Evangelist, Interim at Trinity Church, San Francisco, and Editor of The Pacific Churchman.

In 1979 he organized The Anglican Bibliopole, which relocated to Saratoga Springs, NY in 1982 and continued through 2012, with Robert DeWitt Kearney as partner. He was also associated with the Adirondack Mission ministry, Brant Lake, 1984-99 and at Bethesda Church, Saratoga Springs, NY, 1982-84, 1999-2024.

He was also well known for his weekly acclaimed work, “Art Pottery of the United States”, published in two editions, 1974 and 1987, which gained him inclusion in “Who’s Who in American Art”. He was an occasionally published poet and author of numerous journal articles and museum publications. Research libraries of his papers and publications, have been established at the Winterthur Museum, Wilmington, DE, and the Oakland (California) Art Museum.

He is predeceased by Robert Kearney, partner and companion and by longtime friend John DeCamp. Paul hoped that it could be said of him that he was a sincere friend, a faithful priest, and a hope-filled pilgrim on the journey Godward.

The Order for A Requiem Eucharist will be at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at Bethesda Episcopal Church, 26 Washington St. Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. Interment will be held with his parents at Oakland Cemetery, Yonkers, NY, instead of the earlier family plot at Town Creek (Wilmington), North Carolina.

Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/ Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 N. Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bethesda Episcopal Church, 26 Washington St, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
