Randell, known more commonly as Randy, was born on November 10, 1942, in Clovis New Mexico to Jack Owensby and Connie Lee Prather Owensby. His family had a home in Ranchville, a small area outside of Clovis. Randy graduated from Clovis High School and went on to join the United States Army. After being honorably discharged he moved to Roswell, NM and eventually started working at New Mexico Savings and Loan, and that led to a career in the banking industry, which is what led him to Hobbs. Randy purchased Elliott and Waldron Title & Abstract Company and became a success story in the Title industry as well as a leader in the community. Randy served as Mayor of Hobbs and as a City Commissioner and was involved with many community projects and served on multiple boards within several organizations. 

Randy never quit learning and growing. At 51 he attended college and received his Master’s degree in Psychology. He worked at the Guidance Center of Lea County before going on to become a substance abuse Counselor with Drug Court for 17 years. He helped many while also making lifelong friends that will never forget his guidance and knowledge. Randy was well known in Lea County as genuine, compassionate, honest, and motivated. He was a successful businessman who did not only help the community through action, but his compassion was used to assist others in their fight with addictions and give them resources and tools, which meant a great deal to him.

Randy was a collector of artwork, cars, coins, and loved animals. He loved with his whole heart and gave generously to those in need, whether it be guidance, money, or a home for an animal, he was always helping others.

Randy received numerous awards and recognitions over the years for his involvement in local charities, clubs, and programs, including the Silver Concho Award by the Cowboy Hall of Fame for Lea County which is intended to honor the heritage of Lea County, of which he was most proud to receive. 

Randy was a writer, artist, and an incredible force who loved his family, friends, and the community he lived in, and will be deeply missed by all.

Randy is survived by his children, Gina Stockton, Kerri Owensby Hurt and Allen Hurt, James Owensby and Monica Owensby, Martin Flores and Keely Flores, and his cat Socks.

He is also known as Grandpa and Pops by his grandchildren, Jennifer Contreras and Fabian Contreras, Jessica Pyeatt and Alex Blair, Sarah Martin and Casey Martin, Eric Jones and Tanya Garcia, Keelie Owensby, Kamryn Owensby, Kelen Owensby, and John Hurt, as well as his 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father Jack Owensby, mother Connie Owensby, brother Jackie Owensby, and sister Pat Owensby, along with his grandchildren Marchelle Curtis and Chris Curtis.

A Celebration for Randy will be on Thursday, February 13 at 2:00 PM at the Christian Center. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Lea County Center for the Arts.
