Randy's obituary

Randall “Randy” W. Mentink, age 76, passed away peacefully on April 12th, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with numerous health challenges. Born on October 21, 1948, Randy was the eldest child of Bill and Shirley Mentink (née Kind) and grew up on the family farm in Waldo, WI. —a place where he learned the value of hard work (and developed a lifelong dislike for picking rocks out of the field).

From an early age, Randy was known for his mechanical aptitude. Whether it was tinkering with engines or fixing whatever needed fixing, he had a knack for making things work. His first job as an auto mechanic at B & B Ford in Sheboygan Falls earned him the nickname “Mustang,” a name that stuck with him as he developed a passion for cars and later, Harley-Davidson motorcycles. His love for the open road led him to motorcycle rallies across the country, where he found joy and freedom behind the handlebars.

In his younger years, Randy was a man of many hats—working on the Kohler assembly line, driving a school bus while attending UW-Milwaukee, and launching a successful career in sales. From selling calculators to high-powered mainframes and eventually specialized business software, Randy had a keen sense for business and a persuasive charm that served him well.

After surviving a traumatic brain injury in 1998, Randy embarked on a new chapter as a self-made property manager. He singlehandedly purchased and managed several large rental units, pouring his trademark work ethic into every aspect of the job until his health began to decline in 2020.

Through it all, Randy remained a fighter. Despite the hardships, he never lost his humor or his love for a good story. He was proud of his children and his grandchildren. His face would light up in their presence, and laughter came easily in his later years.

Randy and his family were very appreciative of the many caring professionals from both Horizon Hospice as well as High Point Assisted Living that supported him in his last years and days.

Randy is preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Shirley Mentink; sister-in-law, Sally Mentink; niece, Erica Mentink; and nephew, Philip Mentink. He is survived by his children, Erik Mentink (Mindy Greco), Kim Jenkins (Ben Jenkins); his grandchildren, Hannah, Sam, and Hattie; and his loving partner, Jean Borkin—all of the Milwaukee area. He also leaves behind his sister, Vicky Hansen of Sheboygan Falls, and his brothers, Jack and Dean Mentink of Missouri, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

We remember Randy as a hard worker, a man of many talents, and someone who truly came to appreciate the simple joys of life.

A celebration of Randy’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Randy by sharing a story, turning a wrench, or simply taking a moment to enjoy the open road.
