Rafe's obituary

Rafe Richard Botts, a trailblazer in the world of golf, passed away on January 11, 2024, at the age of 86. Born on March 31, 1937, Rafe's life was a remarkable journey marked by groundbreaking achievements and a deep commitment to family and faith.

He made history as the second black golfer on the PGA Tour, carving a path that inspired many and changed the landscape of golf forever. He was a playing professional for over 50 years on the PGA, European PGA and Senior PGA Tour. He was a distinctive figure, sporting a special golf hat with the embroidered phrase "God is love." This emblem reflected his desire to share his faith and became a symbol of positivity and inspiration for those who followed his career. Not only was he known all over the world, he also captured the hearts of those throughout the Coachella Valley, CA. Whether he was the head pro, teaching a lesson or just enjoying a round of golf, there wasn't a course who didn’t know and love him.

He is survived by his daughter Jessica Botts, his son Jeremy Botts, their mother Valerie Botts, his brother Stanley Botts, his sister Thelma Alston and other extended family members. More than anything he will be remembered for being a beloved father whose heart overflowed with boundless affection and love for his children. His legacy is not only marked by his achievements on the golf course but also by the indelible mark he left on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. Rafe's loving spirit, uplifting sense of humor, and love of storytelling, will be remembered by friends, family, and the golfing community alike.

We invite you to join us for his Celebration of Life Service that will be held at Desert Chapel in Palm Springs, CA on Saturday, February 3rd, at 1pm. Your presence is warmly welcomed as we honor and remember the impact Rafe had on all our lives.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent directly through this site.
