Rafael's obituary
Rafael M. Garcia, a longtime resident of Somers, NY, entered eternal rest peacefully in his sleep at home on July 30, 2025. Born on February 15, 1946, in Colombia, South America, he was the son of the late Ernesto Garcia Barriga (Vito) and Dolores Acevedo Tobon (Lolita), and one of eleven siblings.
In his early life, Rafael traveled extensively through Europe living in Portugal, France, and Spain where he studied languages and the arts at local universities. Fluent in several languages, he eventually moved to the United States, where he worked as a translator at the United Nations and taught philosophy at New York University. It was in the New York suburbs that he met the love of his life, Wendy Carabee.
A retired sign maker and business owner, Rafael was a master craftsman. His many passions included painting, gardening, music, and caring for animals alongside Wendy. Over the years, they lovingly raised dogs, cats, birds, and a variety of exotic animals. In more recent years, Rafael found great peace and fulfillment in tending to his koi pond, a hobby that brought him deep serenity.
He lived a life of quiet strength, creativity, and unwavering dedication to his family. Rafael’s gentle spirit and thoughtful presence touched all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Wendy Garcia; his children, Jennifer Albano (Anthony) and Eric Garcia (Erina); and his cherished grandchildren, Lola, Ethan, Alec, and Braden. Rafael was a devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather who found true joy in the simple moments of life.
His memory will be honored and celebrated with love and gratitude by all who knew him.
In keeping with his wishes, a private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
