Phyllis's obituary
Phyllis Sherwood was born on March 18, 1930, and she would have been 93 years old this year. Phyllis was the author of her life, and her book is closed now, but the story remains joyful and beautiful.
Phyllis grew up in Jamaica, Queens with her parents and sister. She was an independent, energetic, and determined woman. She married at 17 and a few years later, her son, Cliff was born. Life brought its toll of worries and difficulties, but Phyllis' strong will and determination allowed her to forge her own path. As an adult and single mother, she obtained two masters degrees in art education and school counseling. She had a full career, working for the New York State Education Department for twenty years. She adored her Long Island seaside home, and took great care in its renovations and furnishings, filling it with eclectic décor from her travels around the world. She was an avid painter, potter, classical music enthusiast, naturalist, and she had an unparalleled love for animals. Throughout her life, she had four treasured dogs, Coco, Chouchou, Magic, and Lexi. Anyone who knew her could talk at length about her devotion to her dogs.
Phyllis was dedicated to her family. She cherished her parents, sister, son, daughter-in law, grandchildren, and great grandchild.
On Friday, March 17, 2023 at 1pm, she will be buried at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, beside her parents, Anne and J. Harry Sherwood, and her sister, Hermene Hershey. She will be buried with the ashes of both Lexi and Magic. Please join her family in celebrating her life and legacy.
