Phyllis's obituary
Phyllis Eckes (VanZant), age 67, passed away on July 29, 2025, in Dayton, Ohio. Born on December 23, 1957, in Dayton and raised in Xenia, Ohio, she remained a lifelong resident of the area that shaped her generous spirit and deep-rooted connections.
Phyllis was the beloved daughter of Dorothea “Dot” VanZant and Frederick “Ted” VanZant, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also predeceased by her brother Fred VanZant. Her legacy continues through her devoted family: daughter Angie Berry; son Chris Berry; grandchildren Samuel Barrett, Dean Barrett, Dillon Barrett, Hannah Berry, Teagan Clark, and Dominic Berry; and great-granddaughter Mae’Lynn Berry. She is also survived by her loving sisters Doris (Dan) Smith and Kim (Gary) Coveyou, and nieces and nephews Cristin Butler, DJ Smith, Alyssa and Will Coveyou, and John VanZant. Phyllis also has many special friends who will miss her dearly.
A kind-hearted woman with a passion for helping others, Phyllis found joy in the simple yet meaningful moments of life. She cherished making memories with her family and was happiest when surrounded by loved ones. Her warmth extended beyond her home into the community—especially through her time spent cooking at Amvets Post 464, where she shared not only meals but also companionship.
Phyllis was an avid sports fan who rarely missed a chance to cheer on the Cincinnati Bengals or the Ohio State Buckeyes. Whether gathered around the television with family or discussing game highlights with friends, she brought enthusiasm and camaraderie to every season. She enjoyed playing darts, crafting, and watching her grandchildren do all the things they love. She also enjoyed the time she was able to spend spoiling her great-granddaughter.
Her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those she touched throughout her life.
A Celebration of Life will be held on August 24, 2025, from 02:00 PM to 04:30 PM at Amvets Post 464 5420 Brandt Pike. All are welcome to join us in celebrating the life of Phyllis
