Dear Janet, Joel, Elana, and Benji,
I was stunned when I learned of Phillip's tumor. Fortunaely, Ashera and I were able to spend part of a Sunday afternoon with him last summer. I greatly treasure that. Besides the medical issues, we talked about some common joys - our daughters' engagements, our planning for weddings thousands of miles away, and our dreams to travel to Eretz Israel again. I was impressed then with his still strong trust in Hashem, his commitment to all of you, and his unbelievably positive attitude. Immediately and every day from that point on, I've prayed for his full recovery. I felt so disappointed when I heard the news last week.
Your husband and father was such special admirable man, as you all know. Ashera and I are so privileged to know - note the intentional use of present tense - him.
Benji, your hesped described the qualities of Phil perfectly; he was "tam" in a profound way. You called him "unassuming" and he was that and more. I recall and love the memories of when he and I could learn "Pirke Avot" or talk about the Yankees together. He battled his tumor with dignity and courage. He was a real "mensch" and taught us all what character, honesty, and commitment mean.
May your loss be comfortable by the many good memories of the unique man you had in your lives. May those inspire to live up to his modest, deep standards, too.

In the Yavneh Little League’s coaches game, decades ago, they divided the coaches among the teams attempting to spread out the talent. You perhaps could have debated who was the most talented player that day, at least until Phil came up and hit a home run off the wall of the school, about 100 ft. further than anyone else that day, causing everyone’s jaw to drop followed by much hooting and hollering. When I mentioned that moment to him two years ago when we were playing racquetball, he said he had no recollection of it. I remember every time I got on base via an error, and he couldn’t recall the highlight moment of that game (which he was the star of). He was such a truly humble gentlemen. He will be sorely missed.

We are so sorry for your loss. Phil was such a friendly and kind person. Beth Abraham will not be the same without him. We will sorely miss him.
