Sad to know Mr. Toyo is no more. I just thought of him while in my office and I searched for him online only to discover he has passed on to glory. He taught me chemistry in GCL, Eric Moore. Our part crossed again in LASU, Ojo, Lagos around 1998/1999.  Teacher of Teachers, rest in peace sir.

Mr Philip Iranlowo Toyo:

A tribute to an exceptional chemistry teacher and mentor

Matthew 5:4  "Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted"

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Toyo in 1985 after I had transferred from Federal Government College, Okigwe to Government College Lagos to complete my secondary school (high school) education. He was very friendly and his teaching sessions were easily understood. I then withdrew from the after school hours private tutorials I had joined to start attending the one in which he taught.

I still vividly recall him encouraging me to study Medicine. I also recall during my West African School Certificate exam, he approached me during the chemistry practicals and said, "Femi, make sure you give me an A1."  To the glory of God I scored A1 in Chemistry as in several other subjects. He was an excellent teacher who stood head and shoulders above even his peers. Definitely one of the best teachers I have had in my entire life.

What I am most grateful to God for regarding his life is that he was a Christian who served God in his generation. I will never forget his final words to me this year 2021 when he wrote "God will continue to bless you immensely."  May Almighty God comfort the grieving family in Jesus mighty name and may his soul rest in perfect peace until we all meet at the feet of Jesus and spend eternity in heaven.

Uncle Phil loved teaching. Wow, was he a perfect educator. His attention to details while teaching was second to none. I was so inspired by him that I became a Mr Toyo impressionist. 😉
His charm was so infectious. None science students attended his class just to hear him explain a topic in physics or chemistry. I miss him so much

  • My condolences to Mr. Philip Toyo's family  on his transition to higher realms. May his soul continue to rest peacefully in the bosom of his creator. Amen
  • My association  with 'Ęgbon Phil' (as I used to call him) dates back more than 50 years. He was forever vibrant, witty, easy going, and the live of a party. My two eldest sons became closer to him in the late 80s and early 90s, when they attended his 'lesson classes' while preparing to enter the university.
  • We lost touch, till he, out of the blues, contacted me in June this year.

He tried to get us to meet in June, but my schedules did not permit this, before I travelled out of Nigeria for medicals. I have a feeling that I let him down when he probably needed me. My only consolation is that, it was not intentional. Bros Phil, rest on in perfect peace. May the  good Lord continue to shower his blessings on the family you left behind. You definitely will be sorely missed by your family,  friends, and associates.  Till we meet to part no more, I say Adieu!

Mr Toyo as we all fondly called him is the reason I love chemistry and physics so much! He taught as a teacher should and transferred knowledge to me in a way only a father could. He wasn’t just my teacher, he was a dad and a friend. We kept contact even after many years of leaving school and I will miss him! God will strengthen all those you left behind!
While we had not been in recent contact prior to his passing, I have vivid recollections of Uncle Philip in his youth. Upon returning from his studies in the US he impressed us all with his good looks, sharp dressing and confident swagger. We also admired his disarming charm and gentle nature which made him warm and approachable. We looked forward to his frequent visits during which he could always be counted on to give us his undivided attention. He leaves an incredible legacy in his wonderful children who have undoubtedly inherited his strong qualities. He has also touched the lives of thousands of students, many of whom credit his tutelage for their own incredible accomplishments. I would like, on behalf of the entire Oyewole family, to express my sincere condolences to the Toyo family for their devastating loss. Uncle Philip will be sorely missed by many. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.

Uncle Phillip, your passing is a sad loss to me. It makes me reminisce over my childhood through my senior years so far. Very many memories of admiration for you that make me proud to say anywhere that you were my close blood relative. Since I left the nest in the late ‘70s, I have met people along my path on three different continents that knew you in person and appreciated your intellect, wisdom, style and sportiness. Uncle, your influence on me runs deeper than you could ever have imagined. I bid you good night sir. Ẹ sùn re o!
May God's grant his Family the fortitude to bear this loss. Would say this was the only teacher i never really had a challenge about while at GCL.
Rest In Peace Uncle!
Deepest condolences to the Toyo family.
Mr Toyo,
As soon as I landed at GCL, Mr Toyo took me under his wing, even though we both new I was an art student at heart. I went to his lesson after school on Bode Thomas. He is actually one of the only teachers that I remember their name and took an interest in my well being. A lovely Man, may his soul rest in internal peace.
I will forever be great full to a giant of an educator that was warm hearted.
My condolences to Philip's family. I first met Philip when I was a student at GCL, he was our Physics teacher. He was a very lovable and charismatic teacher. He made learning very simple and fun especially physics. He will be greatly missed. May God bless his soul and grant his repose eternal rest in His bosom
A mentor, teacher, friend, and in law . may his soul rest in peace. Odugbesans.
We have all come from the Almighty God! To Almighty God we shall all return to at our appointed time!
