Peter's obituary
Peter Allan Vlerebome, 62, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2023 at the University of Alabama Birmingham Medical Center. Peter suffered a ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm in September and fought valiantly to recover despite numerous setbacks.
Peter was born on July 15, 1961 in Lancaster, Ohio to Martha and Allan Vlerebome. He graduated from Lancaster High School where he played golf and basketball. He graduated from the University of Alabama and was a 3rd generation member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Peter made Birmingham, Alabama his home and began a lifelong career in Sales. Peter met the love of his life, Tina, just before Christmas in 1989 and they were married shortly thereafter. Their adventures led them to Charlotte, North Carolina where they lived for 20 years raising their three sons.
Peter was very active in his sons lives and activities. He took turns coaching their soccer and basketball teams along with many of the Park Crossing neighborhood kids as well. He had a gentle encouraging approach and always brought out the best in his players. One year he had two special needs children on his team and his goal was that every child would score a basket. He accomplished that! Peter loved hanging out at the lake and by the fire pit in the backyard. He loved playing golf with his friends and his sons. Peter loved the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Carolina Panthers. He loved trash talking football especially within his many Fantasy Football leagues that he played with co-workers and the boys. Games were Pete’s absolute favorite especially cards and he was a fierce competitor. There was some type of game played every evening – from Gin Rummy to Scopa to Yahtzee, he loved them all.
He will truly be remembered for his sparkling blue eyes, room brightening smile and witty sense of humor. Peter tried to make everyone he met feel special. His sense of humor and affinity for practical jokes will not be forgotten.
Peter’s infectious smile and contagious laugh will be greatly missed by his wife, Tina Shamis Vlerebome of Birmingham, son Conner Vlerebome (Whitney) and grandson Beau of Bessemer, Alabama, son Cramer Vlerebome of Leadville, Colorado and son Crew Vlerebome of Sequim, Washington, sister Kathy Kittredge, special cousin Mark Sorenson, brothers-in-law, Nick Boyd & Greg Shamis, sister-in-law Carrie Shamis, nephews Michael Kittredge, Braxton Shamis, Anthony Boyd, nieces Bailey Shamis, Samantha Boyd and Skylar Boyd, along with many aunts, uncles and cousins. Peter was preceded in death by his parents; Allan and Marty Vlerebome.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 6th at the Chapel at Church of the Highlands at 3:00pm with visitation beginning at 2:00pm. Those wishing to honor Peter’s memory are invited to make a contribution to Special Olympics or the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.
