Peter Vandenberg, 85, of Corona, CA passed away on May 17th, 2022 unexpectedly of complications of infection. He passed away peacefully with two of his sons and his pastor and close friend by his side.
He was born to Aaron Shedd Vandenberg and Constance Ryland Vandenberg in 1936. His father Shedd was an Advertising Sales Manager for the New England office of Time/Life from the earliest days of those publications. He is survived by his two sisters Jean Hewitt of Sarasota, FL and Lee Potter of Wellesley, MA. He was the nephew of USAF Chief of Staff Hoyt S Vandenberg, and the great nephew of Sen. Arthur H. Vandenberg.
Peter, or “Mr. Pete” as many of his church and Sunday school community like to call him, graduated from Noble and Greenough preparatory school in Dedham, MA followed by Cornell University, where he was active in the ROTC. Following graduation, Peter served in the Navy as a Lt. JG aboard MSO-508, USS ACME on minesweeper duty in the Pacific.
Peter was married to Ruth Audrey Merrigan who preceded him in death. As a widower of four young children ages 6 to 14 years old, he moved to Corona, CA to be closer to his work as a Sales Manager at Container Corporation of America. His surviving children include: Gail Fiock of Fremont, CA, Bill Vandenberg of Corona, CA, Paul Vandenberg of Alameda, CA, and John Vandenberg of Rowland Heights, CA
Peter and 2nd wife, Diana Kodrowski Bond, were married in 1975. She also had four children, doubling the household to ten overnight. Pete was a wonderful “bonus” dad and stepfather as he truly enjoyed kids and supported them enthusiastically in a variety of activities. He was a soccer referee for AYSO for several years. Peter leaves adult stepchildren; Jeanella Blenden of New Jersey, Charles Barton of Monterey, CA, Laura Stevenson of Queensland, Australia and Valerie Yruretagoyena of San Diego, CA.
Peter met and married Susan Danduran in 1984. Susie was truly our father’s soul mate and they were married until her death in 2021, just after their 37th anniversary. He is survived by his stepsons Richard Danduran of Lake Elsinore, and Larry “LJ” Danduran of Corona, who was his caretaker and constant companion who cared lovingly for him until his death. Pete and Susie helped to raise Susie’s nephew and niece Michael Walsh of Florida and Teena Walsh of Marin, CA. Pete and Susie were a very close pair who enjoyed traveling, opera, and living their Christian faith through a children’s ministry which they both
enjoyed immensely. He will be missed by all of his children and their spouses, his 19 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
