Peter's obituary

Peter "Pete" Crawford Gaskin, 87, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, following a sudden stroke. He was surrounded by his beloved immediate family.

Pete was born on December 12, 1937, in Bradenton, Florida, to James Arthur Gaskin and Ethelyn Angelee (Crawford) Gaskin. He lived in Florida, North Carolina, and Texas before settling in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where he spent most of his childhood. After graduating from Lake Charles High School in 1956, he completed his core studies at McNeese State University and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in 1961.

Upon graduation, Pete proudly served in the U.S. Army as an active duty officer (2nd Lieutenant) stationed in Germany from 1961 to 1963, and continued his service in the U.S. Army Reserves as a commissioned officer (Captain) until 1975. In 1964, he met the love of his life, Barbara Ann Adams, and they were married in 1965 at First Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi. Together, they built a life marked by love, family, and adventure.

Pete began his professional career in Indianapolis, Indiana, where their first daughter, Gina, was born in 1967. The family moved to Springfield, Missouri, in 1970, welcoming their second daughter, Kim, in 1972. In 1974, they made Oklahoma City their permanent home, where Pete would live for the remainder of his life.

He dedicated more than 40 years to the environmental engineering industry, working for Kerr McGee before founding his own firm—GMR & Associates, Inc.—and later serving as an independent consultant. His work ethic, integrity, and leadership left a lasting impression on all who worked with him.

Pete was a man of boundless energy and deep devotion. He was unwavering in his commitment to his family, always striving to give them a life full of opportunity and love. He was immensely proud of his daughters, sons-in-law Greg and Mike, and grandchildren Jackson and Sydnee, who were the light of his life.

An outdoorsman at heart, Pete found joy in hunting, fishing, and playing competitive tennis. He had a passion for Cajun cooking—especially his famous gumbo—and loved reading espionage thrillers, playing board games and cards, and sharing laughter around the table. A faithful member of Church of the Savior, Pete served many terms as both a Deacon and Elder, embodying servant leadership and a life guided by faith.

He, Barbara, and the girls enjoyed many family vacations across the United States, and in later years, he and Barb traveled internationally with the Putnam City Retirees Travel Club. Pete was also a founding member and longtime treasurer of the LSU Alumni Club of Central Oklahoma, where he organized spirited watch parties, events, and beloved crawfish boils. Above all, he was Jackson and Sydnee’s biggest fan, cheering them on at every sporting event and milestone.

Pete is remembered not only as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather but as a loyal friend, a wise mentor, and a man whose warmth, humor, and generosity touched countless lives.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, William Gaskin. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara; daughters Gina (Greg) and Kim (Mike); grandchildren Jackson and Sydnee; and his sisters Ethelyn “Tuckie” Tuttle (Kenneth, "Skip"), Cindy Childers, and Melinda Flores, along with many cherished nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, May 21st at 2:00 PM at Church of the Savior (5600 NW 63rd St, Warr Acres, OK 73132). Pete will be laid to rest at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery in Oklahoma City.

In honor of Pete’s life and legacy, donations may be made to Church of the Savior.
