Peter's obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, Peter Joseph Cabrera at the age of 90 on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Northwestern Medicine Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family.
Peter was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 12, 1934 to Guadalupe and Sophie Cabrera, Devoted husband to the late Carmen Cabrera and Loving father to Carmen Buckley, Robert (Christine) Cabrera, Peter T. Cabrera, Michelle (Thomas), Theresa (Paul) and Linda (Henry) Maan de Kok; Father-in-law to Cheryle Cabrera, Michael Buckley and Lori Christian, Cherished Grandfather to Christina Buckley (Mehran Farahmandpour), Adam (Julie) Cabrera, Robert II (Susana) Cabrera, David Cabrera, Michael Jr (Davani) Buckley, Ryan (Richard) Lukehart, Christopher (Jenna) Cabrera, Steven Cabrera, Noah Maan de Kok, Katie Cabrera, Gabrielle , Maya Maan de Kok, and Jacob. Great Grandfather to Richard Lukehart Jr, Sabrina Buckley, Sophia Farahmanpour, Reid Lukehart, Connor Buckley, Nash Cabrera and River Cabrera. Dear brother to James Cabrera and Elizabeth (Lee) Lopez and proceeded in death by the late Loretta Jaimes, Elliott (Zeke) Cabrera, Guadalupe (Wally) Cabrera Frank Cabrera.
Peter married his beloved wife, Carmen, and together they created a warm home for their family in Des Plaines. Peter was a dedicated machine shop foreman, and well-respected employee for over 20 years at Bodine Electric Co. in Chicago. Despite his many responsibilities, he always made time for his family, faith and fun. He loved watching the parade of kids marching out of WGN Bozo’s Circus, across from Bodine. He was an avid bowler and passed that enjoyment to his kids.
More than 60 years ago, he and his wife became founding parishioners of St. Zachary’s Church, where he served in various roles, including the Knights of Columbus (formerly Grand Knight), the Goldenaires Club, the Italian Club, the Respect Life Organization, ushering, Choir and volunteering at August Fest. In addition, he lovingly tended to the church gardens, leaving a legacy of beauty for all to enjoy.
Peter was proceeded in death by his cherished wife, Carmen, with who he shared a deep and abiding love. He found immense joy in spending time with his family, reveling in their milestones, and creating cherished memories He loved to hand out $2 bills especially to his grandchildren and great grandchildren on their birthdays and holidays, a small gesture of love they will always treasure
An avid Cubs fan, he delighted in the victories of his team, particularly when they triumphed over the White Sox during cross-town classic games. Known for his outspoken nature and his giant heart, Peter took the time to engage with everyone he met, leaving a lasting impression of warmth and kindness. He was deeply loved by his family and friends and will forever be remembered as a truly kind, generous, and faithful man, whose spirit will continue to touch the lives of those he left behind.
Visitation will be on March 1, 2025 at 11:00 AM, at St. Zachary Church, 567 W. Algonquin Road, Des Plaines, IL 60016 with mass following at 12:00 PM.
We find comfort in knowing that Dad's legacy lives on through the lessons he taught us, the love he shared, and the memories we will cherish forever
