Peter's obituary
He attended Canoga Park High School, and enlisted in the United States Air Force upon turning 18 in 1951. He was an automotive service and sales manager at several dealerships - including Chevrolet, Honda, Porsche, and Toyota - as well as a professional breeder of American Quarter Horses. He had three sons: Rick, with former spouse Carol Joan Sly; and Peter Jr. and Philip, with former spouse Natalie Hall Dedina. In 1973 he married Bobbye Louise Overbeck, whose daughter Gea became his stepdaughter. He lived in Baton Rouge, Clinton, and Saint Francisville, Louisiana, where he and Bobbye purchased and restored plantation homes. He also lived in Tarzana, Woodland Hills, and Chino, California, before purchasing his ranch in the Rawson Mountains in the 1980s.
Peter was friendly, outgoing, and popular with the girls in his heyday. Family remembered him as “always the last to leave a party” and “an interesting man who could talk to anybody about anything.” He was a student of life, with a natural intelligence and charisma that effortlessly drew people in. He was also a cowboy at heart. He enjoyed riding and showing horses, and most of all, he loved his ranch: a beautiful, secluded property in the sunny hills just south of the Diamond Valley Lake reservoir, where he lived until shortly before his death in 2015.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bobbye Ames; former spouse, Carol Sly; and brother, Carter Ames. He is survived by his 4 children; 6 grandchildren; former spouse, Natalie Dedina; and his siblings, Walter Jr., Hunter, and Sally (Ames) Squires.
On July 25, 2015, Peter’s ashes were scattered by family in the Rawson Mountains overlooking his ranch. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the Parkinson’s Foundation in his memory.
