Perry (Wickliffe) Wilkins, 88, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2026, in Chesapeake, Virginia. Born on February 13, 1938, in Madison, Tennessee, Perry lived a remarkable life filled with dedication to his family, career, and country.
Perry's journey began in Madison as the son of Myrtle and Charlie Wilkins. He grew up alongside his siblings Charles and Vonda, all of whom predeceased him. After graduating from Purdue University, Perry embarked on a distinguished career by joining the United States Navy. His service included attending Submarine and Nuclear Power School and excelling as a helium deep-sea diver. Rising through the ranks with unwavering commitment, Perry retired as Captain of the USS Lapon.
Following his naval career, Perry transitioned into aviation. As Captain for Piedmont Airlines and later founder of Wilkins Aviation, he continued to demonstrate his leadership and passion for exploration. His contributions to both fields left an indelible mark on those who worked alongside him.
Above all else, Perry cherished his role as a father and grandfather. He is survived by his loving children: daughter Nicole Wilkins (husband Michael Leddy) and their children Shane and Michaela; son Perry Wilkins (wife Sharon Wilkins) and their children Riley and Paige; and daughter Samantha Hemphill (husband Frank Hemphill) and their children Kinsley, Hayden, and Jackson. His legacy lives on through them.
Perry's life was one of adventure, achievement, and love for his family. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
Funeral arrangements are currently being made at this time. Family will hold a local service in Camden, North Carolina in the next few weeks and another service at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements will be updated when specific arrangements have been made.
