Perry's obituary
Perry “Dick” Richard Meeks, 88, of Wheaton, IL, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. A man of intellect, service, and humor, Perry leaves behind a legacy defined by his dedication to his country and his deep love for his family.
Born in Webster, Illinois, to Perry and Zerita (Wright) Meeks, Perry graduated from Scotland County High School in Memphis, MO, before embarking on a distinguished military career. He first joined the United States Air Force, where he became a coveted coder during the early era of computing.
Following his Air Force service, Perry moved to Chicago, where he met his beloved wife, Ruth. He continued his professional journey at VA Hines, where he was instrumental in modernizing computer coding and sharing his expertise as an instructor. His commitment to service remained a lifelong theme; he joined the Army Reserve and retired after twenty years of dedicated military duty.
Perry was a man of refined tastes and simple pleasures. He and Ruth shared a deep love for classical music, often attending concerts or spending quiet afternoons with a record player. His favorite piece remained Handel’s Messiah.
In his later years, Perry enjoyed a sun-drenched retirement in San Diego before returning to Wheaton to be near his children and grandchildren. Known for his quick wit and infectious smile, Perry was also the family’s favorite "co-conspirator," frequently seen slipping cookies to himself and his grandchildren when no one was looking. He took great pride in his roots, cherished his 50th-year high school reunion in Missouri, and maintained lifelong bonds with old friends.
Perry was united in marriage to Ruth (Heuser) Meeks in 1968 in Villa Park, IL; she preceded him in death in 2023. He was also preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Hollis Meeks; and his sisters, Jewel Skelton, Virginia Meeks, and Nancy Barnes.
He is survived by his five children: Anthony Meeks, Suzanne (Marc) Thorson, Matthew (Meredith) Meeks, Elizabeth Meeks, and Stephanie Meeks.
His eleven grandchildren: Tyler, Braden, Logan, and Gavin Meeks; Dominic and Benjamin Thorson; Sophia, Marshall, and Reilly Meeks; Jennifer Rodriguez; and Anysha Douglas.
He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss his warmth and humor.
