In lieu of flowers

Please consider a contribution to The Water Infrastructure for Rwanda Project.

Background

Over the years Peggy and her husband Craig have been dedicated benefactors to a number of charitable causes. To continue their legacy of generous giving and in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Water Infrastructure for Rwanda Project. This is a collaboration between OCC Engineering & Industrial/Technical Studies Program, the OCC Foundation, the Church of St. Anselm (Wayside, NJ), Caritas, the Catholic Diocese Byumba (Rwanda) along with other organizations providing essential infrastructure to the Nyagatare region of Rwanda.

Your donation will go directly to the general fund for this long term project. The initial phase is estimated to cost $100,000.

From Father Mathias: “Although Rwanda has a smaller population of 14 million, it faces similar problems as 31 percent of their population, or 3.4 million, lack access to clean water and about 3,000 children die each year from diarrhea caused by a lack of access to safe water and an inadequate sanitation. Only 57 per cent of the population access safe drinking water that is within 45 minutes of their home.

The government of Rwanda aims to improve water and sanitation infrastructure in the entire country. Benefits include reducing waterborne diseases and related healthcare costs, improving living standards for nearly 3.4 million people.

The government encourages all civil society Organizations to participate in the struggle to improve access to clean and safe water.
Under the Caritas arm of the Catholic Church, some Dioceses are helping to improve access to clean and safe water most especially in schools through rain water harvesting. However this water is not reliable as it’s not sustainable more especially during dry seasons.

Currently, the Byumba Diocese has identified the need of participating in increasing access to clean and safe water as well as increasing access to hygiene and sanitation levels on house hold and community levels.

Nyagatare district is one of the least served districts as regards access to clean and safe water. The diocese therefore is planning to increase access to clean safe water through setting up a piped water system.

We have selected Nyagatare deanery to host this project. As a starting point, we need contract a company to carry out a hydrological survey to make sure that underground water is available in enough quantities. We need to get at least 3 points and we can choose the best point with the highest yield per hour.

We shall rely on the hydrological survey report to drill a production well. There is a well-known and professional Drilling Company that has been contracted across East Africa and is called East Africa Drilling Company. It also has Offices in Rwanda and it has done commendable work.

Once a production well with reliable yield per hour is drilled, we can contract a company to make the design of the piped system, showing the laying of the pipelines, position of the water tank reservoir, water points etc.

After securing the needed funds, we, shall conduct community sensitization/ triggering sessions to train the communities in proper management of the WASH facilities, selection and training of the water management committee, collection of the local contribution from the communities, opening up a bank account for saving the money to cater for repairs, maintenance and allowances for water points caretakers.
Construction of the planned piped water system will follow after the communities have been trained in WASH related issues.
With this system in place, we shall be able to extend piped water to schools. And once schools have access to piped water, we shall be able to promote WASH in schools Program that Caters for hand washing before and after meals, hand washing after using the toilet, having clean and safe drinking water at school for the learners, Improving Menstrual hygiene management for Girls and female teachers through setting up change rooms with running water as well as training them in reusable sanitary pads making.”
