Paulette (Polly)'s obituary
Paulette Diane Perkins, known to all as Polly and to her beloved grandsons as “GoGo,” passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of November 20, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and boundless energy. She was 78 years old.
Polly was born on September 23, 1946, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the second of five daughters to Dorothy Rosaline and Donald Lee Perkins Jr. From an early age, Polly displayed an innate curiosity and zest for life, qualities that would define her for the rest of her days. Throughout her life, she lived with an unwavering commitment to family, community, and the pursuit of adventure.
While Polly’s passions were many—music, the arts, travel—family was always at the center of her heart. Her life story is not just one of professional accomplishments, but one of devotion to those she loved. She often said that no matter how far her travels took her, her heart remained firmly anchored at home and it showed.
Polly’s career began in social work, where she encountered experiences that tested her courage and quick thinking. One such moment, which she loved to recount with humor and awe, occurred during her time working with at-risk youth in Detroit. In an unforgettable and tense situation, a group of young men dragged Polly into their car. As she looked into the rearview mirror, she prayed for help, then with steely determination, she declared, “You don’t want to do this. I’ve called the police, and they are on their way.” Miraculously, a squad car appeared just in time, and Polly’s quick thinking saved the day. For Polly, this moment was not just about luck—it was about divine guidance. It was one of many stories that showcased her courage, quick wit, and the unique kind of magic she exuded wherever she went.
Polly’s path later led her to Mars, Inc., where she climbed the corporate ladder with the same dedication and determination she brought to every aspect of her life. For over two decades, she served as a Plant Staff Officer for the Western Hemisphere, a role that took her to countless cities across the globe. She was a force in the corporate world, earning respect from colleagues and business partners alike. At the height of her career, she traveled more than 40 weeks a year, but despite her demanding job, she always found her way back to the heart of her family.
Polly married Thomas Richard Hext—“Tom” or “Pop Pop Howdy Ho,” as he was affectionately known—and together they built a life full of love and laughter. They definitely put the FUN in dysFUNctional! A year after their marriage, Polly gave birth to their daughter (and writer of this obituary). Tom brought two sons from a previous marriage, Teege (aka Tom but don’t call him that, it’s weird) and Todd. After a decade of pleading for a younger sibling, Polly gave birth to Jake (aka Sake).
Together, this motley crew of characters was a constant source of joy, laughter, and adventure. Polly wore the many hats of mother, dedicated not only to her children but to creating lasting memories—whether through camping trips, Broadway shows in New York City, or family vacations to Europe, all while balancing a demanding career.
One of Polly’s greatest gifts was her ability to make each person she encountered feel seen and valued. This ability to connect with others was matched only by her wit, humor, and deep sense of empathy.
In her later years, Polly continued to inspire those around her, even in assisted living, where she would proudly share stories of her travels and accomplishments. Her friends often joked that she had lived more in her lifetime than most could dream of in several.
Polly’s legacy lives on in her family, who will forever carry with them the lessons she imparted: the importance of laughter, the value of adventure, and the unshakable power of love. She is survived by her husband, Tom; her children, [your name], Todd, Teege, and Jake; her grandsons, who adored her as "GoGo"; her five sisters, and countless nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues whose lives were touched by her warmth, wisdom, and boundless energy.
While Polly’s absence leaves a void in the lives of all who knew her, we take comfort in knowing that she lived a life full of meaning, love, and joy. As she embarks on her next great adventure, we know she’ll continue to inspire and guide us with the same fierce love and wisdom she showed in life.
Rest in peace, P2. You will always be in our hearts.
