Paul's obituary

Paul was an avid excerciser who was always looking for ways to keep healthy. He ate health food before that was a thing. Became a runner, before that was a thing. Used and recommended dietary supplements before that was a thing. And began meditating and going to Esalen for spiritual weekends, also before those were things. His commitment to health was seen in his professional life. He trained as a cardiologist and practiced medicine in a number of different capacities for many years. He also trained and worked as a family therapist when he saw that many of his patients’ heart problems seemed to be exacerbated by emotional traumas. In this, like in so many things, he was ahead of his time.

Paul’s quest for fulfillment took him many places. He spent many summers traveling in Europe where he instilled a love of travel in his daughters. He created a way to work at the VA Hospital in Hawaii so he could travel there several times a year to combine work and pleasure. He loved Isla Mujeres in Mexico and spent many lazy days on the beach in that lovely town. His loves also included convertibles as he drove many small rag tops including a classic MG over the years. He even had one of the first Le Cars in the U.S. and while this car was a disaster it was great as a conversation starter.

Paul was the loving father of three daughters (Michelle, Sara and Julie) and the step-father of two more daughters (Ashley and Kate). There were many women in his life! He was also Papa Paul to his seven grandchildren which include three granddaughters (Carly, Maya and Gabriella) and four grandsons (Baylor, Toby, A.J. and Ryan) - finally there were some males to join him in the family. He continued to have a nice relationship with both of his former wives, Susan (the mother of his three daughters) and Marybeth (mother of his two step-daughters). Marybeth was by his side when he passed, showing the connections that Paul retained with people important to him even as their lives moved in different directions.

Paul was always ready to share his knowledge and help his family and friends. He lived an authentic life – being true to himself - before that was a thing. He will be missed.
